Falafel for Breakfast in North Gaza! (16.12.2024)
This morning, the irresistible aroma of freshly fried falafel and warm, freshly baked bread filled the air at the Al-Shujaiyah displacement school in North Gaza. Our team in the Translating Falasteen x The Sameer Project @sameerproject North campaign set up a community kitchen right inside the school, working tirelessly to prepare delicious falafel balls and bread so everyone could enjoy a hearty sandwich.
In total, we made 600 loaves of bread and fried 2,080 pieces of falafel, which were distributed to 200 families sheltering in the school. Meanwhile, 35 lucky students received freshly prepared falafel sandwiches in their classroom, giving them a nourishing start to their day.
A heartfelt thank you to this incredible community for allowing us to continue this vital work. Your support keeps us going!

The Red Cross called my friend today and asked, 'Is your son's name Mohammad?' He replied, 'Yes, he passed away three years ago, may Allah have mercy on him.' They told him, 'Your son is being held in the Israeli Negev prison.' You can only imagine the utter joy that filled his heart—a 15-year-old child imprisoned by the occupation and subjected to the harshest torture.
Tal al-Hawa, the neighborhood where I grew up, has been completely wiped off the map by the Israelis. And they are still killing the people of my homeland.
Say something. Speak up. Don’t stay silent.

There is something haunting about this photograph now.
Taken before May 2021, it shows the military council of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades gathered together in one narrow underground room. Mohammed Al-Deif sits at the far end, above the others. Around him are Marwan Issa, Ahmad Ghandour, Ghazi Abu Tamaa, Mohammed Odeh, Izz al-Din Haddad, Ayman Nofal, Raad Saad, Mohammed Shabana, Hakam Issa, Bassam Issa, Raad Thabet, Mohamed Sinwar and Rafa Salama.
Today, not one of them remains.
Every man in this photograph has since been martyred. They did not fall together. Most were targeted separately, one after another, across different years and different Israeli strikes. Bassam Issa was martyred during the war of May 2021. Ayman Nofal and Ahmad Ghandour were martyred in 2023. Marwan Issa, Rafa Salama and Mohammed Al-Deif followed in 2024, with Deif martyred in an Israeli airstrike near Khan Younis on 13 July. Others were martyred through 2025 and beyond, until the photograph that once showed a living military council became, in its entirety, a photograph of the dead.
There is something deeply solemn in that transformation. When the shutter closed, none of them could have known exactly how the years ahead would unfold, or that one day people would look back at this room knowing that every face within it had passed from this world.
For Palestinians and many of us who remember them as martyrs, the image carries something beyond military history. It speaks of men living beneath constant pursuit, of friendships and responsibilities shared in hidden rooms, and of the strange intimacy of a photograph whose meaning changes completely with time. One by one, the chairs emptied. One by one, the voices disappeared.
Yet faith teaches that death is not simply disappearance. A man leaves behind his deeds, the people who loved him, the memories carried by those who knew him and the account that belongs ultimately to God alone.
Perhaps that is what makes this photograph so powerful now. It captured a single ordinary moment between men who could not see the whole road ahead of them.
Years later, every place in the room has become a place of remembrance.
May God have mercy upon the martyred, accept those whose intentions were sincere, comfort the families who carried their absence, and grant peace to a land that has buried far too many of its sons.

🔴 An Israeli soldier posted this photo of Palestinian journalist Marah Awad, blindfolded and with her hands bound, following her arrest during a pre-dawn Israeli military raid on her home in Beit Ummar, north of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, on October 26.
According to her brother Hamouda Awad, Israeli soldiers questioned her about her writings on Israel, accused her of “incitement,” and confiscated her phone and computer before taking her away. Soldiers also reportedly beat two of her brothers during the raid.
No formal charges have been publicly confirmed.

Her name was Refeef Lubbad. She was 17, an 11th-grade student, shot and killed as she returned home from school.
You did not, and will not, see a breaking news alert about her killing. The New York Times and other complicit media outlets will not put her face on their front pages. But here, you will see her face and know her name.
May the day come when those who killed Refeef and our families are brought to justice, and when the names of journalists who justified, condoned, or dismissed their deaths as insignificant are displayed on every street, so their complicity is never forgotten.

“Let me die,” American photojournalist Heidi Levine repeats to journalists Jasper Nathaniel as they try to outrun masked Israeli settlers who attacked her on Friday while she covered the olive harvest in the West Bank village of Abu Falah, near Ramallah.
Around 80 settlers attacked Palestinian olive harvesters in the village, AP reported. The Palestinian Red Crescent said it treated six people injured in two attacks in Abu Falah.
Levine, a freelancer for the Washington Post, told the Committee to Protect Journalists that the settlers knocked her down and kicked her for at least 10 minutes, even after she identified herself as an American journalist. They stole her camera, phone and bag. She was eventually taken to a hospital in Ramallah.
"The IDF provided cover, with tear gas and machine guns, while the settlers beat" Levine "nearly to death," Nathaniel wrote, adding that soldiers then shot a Palestinian bystander and aimed their guns at and shoved paramedics trying to treat him. AP photos and circulating videos show Israeli soldiers standing over a wounded Palestinian man after they shot him.
Andrey X, an activist also at the scene, said a Palestinian man "saved our lives from the settler-terrorists who attacked the olive harvesters and journalists” armed only with a slingshot.

To be clear, the only reason I was able to reach Heidi was because young Palestinians provided cover with rocks against machine-gun- and tear-gas-wielding settlers and soldiers. It’s those kids, not the settler terrorists, who the IDF was hunting after the attack.

Israel killed a 17-year-old girl named Rafeef Lubbad in Jabalia by shooting her in the head.

I was walking today, watching the tired faces of people — as is my habit. The faces were filled with sadness, exhaustion, and despair. I noticed an elderly man asking every person in the street: “Have you found my wife? Have you found my children?”
When I approached him, he asked me the same questions. I didn’t know what to say. I told him, “I hope you find them soon.” What puzzled me more was that people weren’t answering him. When I asked one of the passersby about him, they told me that this old man is the sole survivor of his family. His wife and all his sons and daughters were killed in a massacre committed by Israel two years ago, and he has been in this state ever since.
I didn’t know what to say! Every corner of this city is crying bitterly.

“Mom, don’t worry, we made this as a barrier.” A displaced family in Gaza has piled sand into mounds around their tent and dug a pit behind them, and whenever the shooting starts, they climb down into it and wait. Moments into filming, the gunfire begins again, and they scramble back into the hole. Canvas stops nothing, so this is what shelter looks like now: a trench in the sand beside the place they sleep.
This is daily life for Palestinians in Gaza as the Israeli occupation army closes in, pushing the Yellow Line deeper into neighbourhoods night after night and firing on the tents of families who have nowhere left to go. Today, Israeli fire on tents killed little Misk Hazem Al-Dalu in Al-Maghazi camp, and in Al-Atatra, west of Beit Lahia, occupation forces opened fire on a camp for displaced families, wounding three. A year into the ceasefire, families in Gaza are digging trenches to survive the night, and five Palestinians were killed across the Strip today, two of them children.
