As mission-driven organizations explore how to adapt to a changing sector, radical candor deserves a seat at the table.
At the 2026 #SkollWF, Cheri-Leigh Erasmus of the Accountability Lab made the case for leaning into difficult topics early on in exploratory conversations about restructuring the work. That candor, she argued, is what allows organizations to move forward with clarity and kindness, both internally and with the communities they serve.

“One of the reasons I am encouraged by this forum is that it reinforces the understanding that Africa is not a monolith. Despite its diversity, there are shared challenges and aspirations. Platforms like this enable knowledge exchange and collaborative problem-solving on governance issues,” - Jaco Roets, Accountability Lab Global

Across our coalition and our industry, organizations are navigating unprecedented challenges as global aid budgets tighten. How we respond to these shifts will determine not only the resilience of our individual institutions, but also the collective strength of our democratic ecosystem.
Our partner @AccountLab, in collaboration with @humentum_org and @globalvoices, are running a follow-up survey to capture the realities organizations are facing in light of aid cuts. The insights gathered will shape donor priorities, inform the media, and provide comparative data on how the international development landscape is evolving.
The survey is available in English, French, Spanish, and Arabic, and your participation is vital. By sharing your experiences, whether you are experimenting with new funding models, adopting technology, or facing barriers in sustaining operations, you contribute to a clearer picture of what is at stake and how we can act together.
We encourage all GDC partners to take part in this important effort. Your voice matters, and your input will help ensure that democracy-focused organizations are visible in this conversation and that solutions reflect our shared needs.

In an era of growing mistrust, donor fatigue, and shrinking civic space, true accountability goes beyond reports and checklists. It’s about being answerable to the communities we serve.

Since 2020, @AccountLab #Zimbabwe (ALZ) and the Vendors Initiative for @visetinfo have been implementing CivActs in Goromonzi. Our citizen engagement approach, CivActs, empowers communities to engage duty bearers and devise solutions to their most pressing challenges.
Yesterday, with our friends from VISET, we were in Goromonzi for a community exit meeting for the New Narratives for Accountability in Zimbabwe (NNAZ) Project.
The meeting, attended by the citizens, representatives of community based organizations, councillors, representatives from cooperating line ministries, village heads, and community-based organizations, reflected on the achievements of CivActs in Goromonzi and proposed strategies to sustain the impact.
Through CivActs, the community engaged the local authority and through sustained advocacy, the local authority constructed vending stalls and ablution facilities at Majuru Growthpoint, a tarred road from Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ) to Majuru Growthpoint, and sheltered bus stops along the major roads.
The stakeholders acknowledged that CivActs had significantly enhanced dialogue among key stakeholder groups, including with the local authority and Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ), a mining company operating in Goromonzi.
The local leaders commended the Community Frontline Associates (CFAs), who worked under the NNAZ project for their service to the community and encouraged them to continue utilizing the skills and knowledge acquired through the project as agents of social change.
Accountability Lab is scheduled to continue with the NNAZ closeout meetings in Mbare, Chitungwiza, and Glenview, and will conclude with a National Closeout Ceremony at the end of July.

“Over years of introspection, I had come to the conclusion that a lot of what we were doing as civil society was not necessarily wrong, but was insufficient in producing the kind of results that we were looking for. I was constantly reminded that we should not turn into what we were fighting against because the people didn’t know anything else or any other way.” reflects @Makil, Accountability Lab Zimbabwe's Country Director.
