In the US unleaded petrol is 94p/litre. 11p of that is tax.
Here it’s upwards of £1.70 and 81.43p* of that is tax.
Without tax the US and UK price at the pump would be 83p/l and 89.5p/l
It’s not international prices forcing up our fuel to unaffordable levels.
It’s our government. 😡😡😡
(*UK pump price of 170.9p per litre, tax is 81.43p per litre, meaning 47.6% of what you pay goes directly to the government.
Tax Breakdown
•Fuel Duty: 52.95p per litre
•VAT (20%): 28.48p per litre (charged at 20% on the underlying cost of the fuel plus the fuel duty, creating a "tax on a tax").
◦VAT on the fuel duty alone: 10.59p of that VAT amount comes directly from taxing the 52.95p duty.)

So Cambridge University is abandoning its plan to investigate its hiring of Jason Arday and instead focus on whether they were sufficiently POLITE and caring during the process.
Let me help you out, Cambridge. You have been way too polite and compassionate this whole time and this is exactly why Arday is dead and why your reputation is in the toilet.
You abandoned hiring standards, then called any questions vile and scrutiny a hate crime.
That is what put a man in a job he didn't belong in.
I genuinely don’t know how anyone respects Cambridge University after this. If you’re an alum you might as well shred the degree.

Every year @BritishProgress asks Britain's top economists and policy researchers what the UK should do to increase growth.
🚨 As covered exclusively for @thetimes this morning, the 2026 growth survey results are now in! 🚨
This was our biggest survey yet with over 100 responses.
📉 The bad news: Britain's public finances, with inflation hit by external shocks, are in a bad state.
📈 The good news: the UK is not without options. There is much that can be done on the supply side reforms, & smarter fiscal policy can raise revenue while supporting growth.
Here are the 12 most interesting results 👇
*1. Where should the government prioritise spending political capital?*
We asked "In what areas should the Government invest more (or less) political capital to achieve growth?"
NB this was explicitly not a question about spending – that's the next one.

🚨Oracle might be in big trouble.
Its credit default swaps just hit a record high, and its 2056 bonds are now yielding over 8% for the first time.
Oracle is one downgrade away from junk status.
If that happens, $120 billion of its bonds get automatically pulled from investment-grade indexes.
This comes right after Oracle's force majeure notice on its New Mexico data center, and while long-term US yields are hitting multi-decade highs.
This isn't just an Oracle problem.
Credit default swaps are rising across Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Nvidia, and SpaceX too.
The market is starting to worry about how this entire AI buildout is being financed.

The right must form a grand coalition around three core principles:
1. Dramatic cuts to public spending.
2. Ending illegal immigration (including mass deportations) and dramatically reducing legal migration.
3. Scrapping net zero and delivering cheap energy.
Everything else is secondary. If they don’t, they’ll lose to a tactical left-wing coalition. That is the political reality.

More information emerging about the conviction of Del Somerville (jailed for two years for throwing a plastic bottle and telling police officers to 'F**k off' at a protest against the small boats).
The court heard that Somerville had played a relatively minor role at the incident, had tried to pull another protester away when he confronted police, actually lived at the marina rather than travelled there for the purpose of protesting, and that the plastic bottle he threw was 'small' or 'empty'.
It's impossible, in the context of wider sentencing policy in this country, to avoid the conclusion that the sanction handed down to Somerville amounts to two-tier justice.

One reason the masses rebel against AI is that they correctly assess that AI is most useful to smart people (not them).
AI shifts human work from execution to orchestration, and orchestration is more cognitively demanding.
Smaller and smaller teams of smart people will be able to deliver more and more, while cognitively modest haters fade into irrelevance

Leaving aside the arguments over the reasons why this has happened, it is shocking that Europe does not have a single frontier AI lab, nor even a near-frontier lab nor even an effort that could likely lead to building up a frontier lab in the future.

EAs being sex weirdos makes for good tabloid gossip, and maybe helps negatively polarize people against them, but I think focusing on that is both cheap and counterproductive. What matters is that they’re ruthlessly power-seeking doomsday cultists, and if they get their way it will be very bad for the world. Focusing on slutcon or whatever gets clicks but isn’t going to persuade people with power (disproportionately high-openness) and makes the opposition to them seem like a church lady moral panic, which is low status coded. The things that matter are (1) they’re wrong, and (2) they’re maneuvering for control. Write about that.

Academia is demonstrably fine with fraud and opposed to reform.
Cambridge is no longer planning to investigate Jason Arday’s academic record or the university’s decision to hire or cover for him.
Instead, the investigation will focus on “his welfare, his care, his well-being” and “whether the school offered him sufficient support amid accusations that he plagiarized.”

We are officially witnessing the biggest wave of infrastructure investment in modern US history.
Total investment in data centers and AI infrastructure is projected to average 3.63% of US GDP per year from 2025 to 2032, the highest proportion among major infrastructure buildouts since the 1800s.
The previous largest investment, railroad infrastructure, represented 2.24% of GDP per year in 1870-1890.
This was followed by highway investment that averaged 1.13% of GDP in 1956-1973, while telecommunications and fiber infrastructure averaged 1.10% in 1996-2003.
By comparison, electrification stood at just 0.50% of GDP in 1905-1925, while canal investment accounted for 0.66% in 1836-1841.
This comes as AI and data-center infrastructure investment is projected to total ~$10.3 trillion between 2025 and 2032.
The AI buildout is the largest infrastructure investment in modern US history.
