In the Press on this day in 1829: Workers were protesting against low wages, the tithe system and the introduction of threshing machines, which took away their paid employment. There was mass machine-breaking, rick and barn arson and threatening letters signed by "Captain Swing".

Only the robin sings tonight, in our windswept rainy wood. From other birds there's no refrain, Though there would be if they could. They dislike singing in the rain, But they really think they should. 🐦

In the press this day in 1798: Stagecoach route from the Crown East Grinstead to Croydon. "Blitchingly" (Bletchingley) derives from "Bleechinglye" reflecting the extraction/processing of Fullers Earth along the Redhill to Godstone ridge since Roman times. I worked there (later!).

No evening bird report today, due to the gusting wind roaring through the Loop like an express train. If any birds are singing, and some probably are, Merlin can't hear them. 🎧🐦‍⬛🍃🌪️

@AboutEG took these whilst shopping at Sainsbury’s this morning. Three beautiful engines, 9F 92134, 71000 Duke of Gloucester and Bulleid Battle of Britain No. 34059 Sir Archibald Sinclair. The coaches looked packed on this lovely sunny morning.
