Are you ready for arete or did you forget?
Marc Aramini (@marc_aramini) returns to the show to discuss Soldier of Arete by Gene Wolfe.
What is arete? How do the Spartans abuse it? How does Wolfe use pagan myths to point to Christian truths?
All this and more!

Fr Ripperger has done a LOT of good.
The thing is, as he's gotten more famous, he's done and said some really questionable, dangerous things.
The thing that sticks out in my mind are the numerous occasions on which he has quoted things said to him by demons.
This is terrible.
The stupidest demon is vastly more intelligent than any man.
The are masters of deceit and manipulation. A prudent man, receiving some word from them, will discard it utterly as poisoned.
But he repeats such things to hundreds of thousands of people.
Only God knows how many souls were harmed by the lies and half-truths that Fr R heard and then repeated.
You have reverted to the faith lately, Mike, so you might not be familiar with the case of Fr John Corapi, another priest who drew a large following, mainly for speaking boldly and manfully against sin. Look him up. He basically imploded in a scandal of sex, drugs, and embezzlement after he refused to obey his bishop.
Remember that his bishop, whether a good man or a bad man, knows Fr Ripperger when the camera lights are off, and knows him far better than we do. Pray for him and his judgment.
Pray for Fr R that he takes this medicine, whether he "deserves" it or not, manfully and humbly, and comes out of it better than ever.
Either his obedience or rebellion will reveal Fr Ripperger's inner life to the rest of us in ways we mostly would not like ourselves.
CHAD (!) PRIEST CANCELLED
Oh wait:
"Archbishop Golka recently met with Fr. Chad Ripperger to discuss his ministry and his community, the Society of the Most Sorrowful Mother. During that conversation, the Archbishop asked Fr. Ripperger to consider a one-year fast from public speaking and interviews. The time will allow him to devote himself to the Society and to the people it serves. Fr. Ripperger readily agreed. At the end of the year, they will review the arrangement together."
It sounds like it was pretty amicable and the Bishop might be trying to get Fr. Ripperger to focus on his ministry and not just do the podcast circuit. Probably a good decision.
🚨FATHER CHAD RIPPERGER SILENCED BY HIS BISHOP
"Denver Archbishop James Golka has ordered Fr. Chad Ripperger to cease all public ministry — no talks, no preaching, no writing — for one year."

I'm a firm believer of Jack Kirby's take on Victor. The fact that he's so vain of a little scar, he would put on a mask to cover it up.

Tolkien, Chesterton, and Lewis countersignallers are enemies. No, I don’t care how based of a Catholic they are. They will go through trillions of years of purgatory.

My dear friend Bethany would have been forty-one this week. In October 2012 she took her own life. I wrote an essay reflecting on the horrors we both suffered in a doomsday cult, and the classic novel that might, possibly, have saved her. (link in second tweet)
These are very good and the artist has other cool stuff too
These look like a bit of a departure from his normal work though

Astonished to find myself at number 1 and number 2 in British and Irish poetry. Maybe the epic poem is making a comeback!
Harley Quinn was originally genuinely hilarious and a great character in her own right
Look at how badly comics downgrades our characters.
Harley Quinn went from a funny, cute, and interesting opponent to a half-naked sultry seductress. Notice how the original Harley Quinn wasn't seductive even when she was trying to BE seductive.
In my opinion (yes I'm old) this ruined her. She went from unique to one of a vast herd of forgettable characters, and I'm sure DC has no idea what it lost.
If we need a seductress villainess for Batman we already have Poison Ivy.

This is a case where you really can just tell the Bishop to pound sand and pray them anyway. People really can just start praying them aloud after Mass because a Bishop can't say you can't pray a prayer after Mass inside the Church.
Our local bishop is banning the St Michael prayer from the end of Mass.
His article, in the local Catholic paper, explains that in order to celebrate the liturgy “in accordance with the mind of the Church” priests need to “catechize the people of God as we move away from additional prayers recited together immediately before, during, and immediately after Mass.”

My deepest thanks, friends. Your prayers have saved a innocent life from the abortionists.
Please pray for the young mother to be, and her baby son, that both come through this unharmed and safe.
I'll pray a rosary for all of you. God Bless. 🙏

I didn't want to share this but I need a lot of prayers. My son has been in the hospital on a ventilator comatose since Tuesday. He had a seizure this morning and moved to a better hospital. He's so young and newly married. Please pray frens.

I don't want you to panic but there's only two weeks left before Halloween if you haven't cleaned your bat yet.
But it’s the villain doing it
Look, I’ve no confidence in this movie but let’s not stoop to saying the creator automatically endorses everything the villain does
