This is always a difficult week for me. Anniversary of my mom passing away is today, my grandmother was yesterday, both of which I was close to. My great grandmothers anniversary passing is tomorrow, which although I wasn't close to, it makes the week feel more ominous

Over the next couple days I'm going to post a thread I have been working on. About Christian themes of the Emperor in the Science fiction franchise of Warhammer 40K.
#1 The Emperor of Mankind in Warhammer 40,000 is a tragic figure who was a near flawless super hero of near unlimited power that rebuilt human civilization in 30,000 AD after it fell apart. But he had a key flaw of militant atheism and a rejection of faith which represent a profound blind spot, ultimately contributing to the Imperium's downfall and his own ironic deification. This flaw, rooted in his hubris, whose secrecy and denial of spiritual needs invite corruption, much like the biblical fall from grace. While he positioned himself as humanity's messianic savior—helping humanity from the shadows since 8000 BC, his suppression of religion created a vacuum that Chaos exploited. By the 41st millennium, the Imperium worships him as the God-Emperor, with the Imperial Religion re evolving into resembling Catholic structures: Saints, relics, and Inquisition, Warrior Monastic orders and Ecclesiarchy, . This evolution subverts his secular Imperial Truth, arguably proving that in denying faith is an enduring trait that cant be extinguished.
The Emperor then speaks to Horus as Horus's favorite son Garviel Loken. Loken convinces Horus to finish the Emperor without the powers of Chaos. Horus gives up his power of the Chaos gods. Which the Emperor then stabs Horus with the powerful knife Ollanius Pius gave him. The Emperor tells Horus "I wait for you. And I forgive you". Horus dies and the Emperor is on the brink of death. The Emperor is found by his son Rogal Dorn and interred on the Golden throne which is essential to continued warp travel in space and protecting Earth from demons. But the Throne becomes his eternal crucifixion, his decaying body mirrors Christ's agony for salvation. But there is no resurrection—only stasis—subverting Christian hope into grim endurance.
The Emperor is not defeated though. His actions are primarily spiritual while on the throne. His son Roboute Guilliman took up the role of leading the Imperium after the Horus Heresy. But was later killed by his Demon brother Fulgrim. But as Guilliman's soul was about to be lost to the warp the Emperor saved his son.
The story picks up again 10,000 years later in 41,000 A.D.. Guilliman is reawakened and is helped subtly by the Emperor. Guilliman begins to recognize the Emperor was wrong about faith and that it is something worth protecting as its also been one of the key things saving the Imperium, although in a flawed way.
Many fans of the franchise see the story as a criticism of religion. But I believe it actually more of a story of a flawed god figure that didnt believe in faith, which led to disaster but is also the key to putting things right.
I wrote up an essay thread on Christian themes around the Emperor in Warhammer 40k, and I included some pretty cool fan art I found. I am not at all a good writer, but I gave it a good try.
