As I have been informed (many times) it is called “stemming.” The act of stemming is not illegal - defenses can still do it. But if it results in the offensive line flinching, false starting, etc, then it is a delay of game penalty on the defense

Hey @SEC tell John McDaid that offensives need to have discipline before the snap. Defensive false starts is one of the absolute dumbest things you could ever implement. Not defensive coordinators fault that offenses can't adhere to their own snap counts! Stemming isn't illegal!
