U.S. stocks took a hit on Friday as investors again hit tech stocks ahead of the key Q3 earnings season. Treasury yields were mixed again after last weekβs higher inflation prints, while the dollar also fell against the majors.
ππ’π₯, ππ¨π₯π
Oil prices rallied strongly as traders factored in increased hostilities across the Middle East as well as the deteriorating relationship between the U.S. and Ukraine, while gold, for a change, was relatively quiet, trading at the top end of recent ranges.
π‘Further developments on the geopolitical front are likely to see oil remain in focus for traders today, while there are also some key data updates due out of China and Canada as the trading day progresses.

It was a mixed day for U.S. markets yesterday. Stocks pushed higher in trading, with the $Dow leading the way, whilst tech sectors struggled to make much ground.
Treasury yields fell sharply to trade back at levels not seen since early September despite higher-than-expected PPI and Retail Sales numbers as traders pulled back bets of a rate hike this month. The $DXY also lost ground in line with the weaker yields, dropping 0.5% on the index.
ππ’π₯, ππ¨π₯π
Oil markets saw a divergence between the major contracts as $WTI rallied strongly after U.S. crude stocks fell hard while $BRENT drifted lower. $Gold rallied off support levels on the back of the weaker dollar.
π‘Itβs a quieter day on the event calendar today, with little in the way of major data updates to move the market, however, we do hear from some major central bankers, including Fed Chair Kevin Warsh during the Asian session, which could add some volatility to the day.
$Gold is currently consolidating near a pivotal short-term inflection point around $4,162, balancing recent gains driven by declining U.S. Treasury yields against shifting monetary policy expectations.
With the precious metal trading within a defined technical range, market participants are closely monitoring upcoming macroeconomic data to determine the next directional breakout.
3 triggers to watch for the next big move:
π U.S. $PPI & Retail Sales Data: The outcome of upcoming wholesale inflation figures and consumer resilience data will be key in driving broader $USD and Treasury yield flows.
π U.S. Treasury Yields & $USD Strength: Persistent movement in bond yields and dollar strength threatens to cap gold's upside, raising the prospect of tighter monetary policy pricing.
ποΈ $FederalReserve Policy Trajectory: Market expectations regarding interest rate paths remain pivotal; higher borrowing costs diminish gold's appeal, while stabilizing yields offer support.
Will U.S. $PPI today stir up the Fed's plan in October?
The rate hike hopes are brewing after yesterday's hot CPI. The producer prices on 15 October 3:30PM (GMT+3) could lift the hike expectations or leave some breathing room for the Fed.
πForecast:
Headline PPI: 0.6% MoM (Previous: 0.4%)
Core PPI: 0.3% MoM (Previous: 0.2%)

U.S. Marketπ
U.S. tech stocks took a hit in trading yesterday as higher-than-expected inflation data weighed on market sentiment.
Treasury yields were mixed along the curve by the end of the day, but the dollar pushed higher against the majors.
Oil, Gold π
$Oil prices edged higher as investors continued to monitor the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, while $XAUUSD dropped back to support levels on the back of the stronger dollar.
π‘It is another busy day on the event calendar today, with key data dropping across all three trading sessions, and traders are expecting markets to remain volatile as the day progresses.

πΊπΈU.S. Marketπ
U.S. Stocks finished lower on the day as major U.S. banks declared mixed earnings reports, however they did receive a boost towards the end of the session as the Fedβs John Williams advised that he did not anticipate any rate hikes in 2027.
Treasury yields ended higher at the short end of the curve after Williams said he did think another hike in 2026 was appropriate, however they dropped on the later dates, while the dollar took a dip against the majors ahead of key inflation data tonight.
π’οΈOil, Gold π
$Oil prices were mixed as traders continued to analyse the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East while $gold ultimately drifted lower on the day.

The macroeconomic calendar kicks into gear today with the key U.S. CPI numbers due out later today, while we are also set to hear from several major central bankers who are in Bangkok for the IMF meetings.

U.S. Marketπ
U.S. stocks experienced a mixed day yesterday, with tech stocks pulling back in lighter trading due to the Columbus Day holiday, which kept bond markets closed. Increasing geopolitical tensions kept the dollar bid as it registered another annual high against the majors.
Oil, Gold π
$Oil prices pushed higher again as Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia increased, forcing the closure of Riyadh airport, while $gold lost ground on the back of the stronger dollar.
π‘ It is another quiet day on the macroeconomic calendar today, however, traders are again expecting markets to remain busy as investors continue to price in fresh geopolitical developments.

U.S. Marketπ
U.S. stocks rallied on the final trading day of last week with the $SPX and $NASDAQ both rounding out the week near record levels as investors looked ahead to another busy week. Treasury yields pushed higher while the dollar also rose against the majors.
Oil, Gold π
$Oil prices pushed higher as supply concerns increased and traders are expecting a bigger move on the Monday open after news of a major strike by Houthi forces at Riyadh airport over the weekend. $XAUUSD bucked the recent trend to push higher back to a one-week high, having found support under the $4,100 level.
π‘It is a very quiet calendar day ahead, with liquidity likely to be lower than usual due to holidays in some major centers, however traders are expecting markets to remain lively as they adjust to geopolitical updates from the weekend as well as any fresh news.
