David Kapone Williams, 36, a member of the Western Hills Bloods, was sentenced to almost 28 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to RICO conspiracy. The WHB engaged in narcotics trafficking, illegal firearms possession, witness intimidation, and violence including murders in 2014 and 2015. Williams admitted his role in the May 2015 killing of a rival gang member near Tucson International Airport.
“This significant sentence is part of an over ten-year effort to hold members of the Western Hills Bloods, a violent criminal street gang, accountable for their acts of violence and intimidation which they inflicted on the citizens of Tucson,” said @ATFPhoenix Special Agent in Charge A.J. Gibes.

After an @ATFPhoenix, @FBIAlbuquerque, @santafepolice, @ABQPOLICE, and @LasCrucesPolice investigation, Zachary Babitz will spend the rest of his life in federal prison for carjacking and killing an elderly man in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In August of 2024, Babitz carjacked 83-year-old Gordon Wilson, then murdered him and fled the area.
The investigation revealed that Babitz was a multi-convicted violent felon, and had been on an armed robbery spree prior to and after the murder. He was arrested in Las Cruces four days after the carjacking. Babitz pled guilty in federal court to charges including carjacking, armed robbery, and federal firearms crimes in April.

ATF is proposing to amend regulatory requirements to submit fingerprints and photographs with firearms applications. Currently, applicants must submit 2”x 2” passport-style photographs and either one or two fingerprint cards, depending on the application type. ATF proposes that all applicants can submit a copy of a photo ID, and just one fingerprint card. Responsible persons under the National Firearms Act would submit one fingerprint card only if needed to facilitate a background check. ATF is aware of claims concerning the possible publication of data allegedly obtained during the previously disclosed cybersecurity incident involving a standalone system used in connection with CALEA. We are working with @TheJusticeDept and other federal partners to assess these claims and take appropriate actions. As stated previously, the affected system was separate from ATF’s enterprise network. ATF has not confirmed the authenticity, nature, or scope of the materials at issue.

100 years ago today, Eliot Ness was appointed a temporary prohibition agent in the U.S. Department of the Treasury, a legacy agency of ATF.
Against long odds, he and his “Untouchables” shattered organized crime’s grip on Chicago and helped bring Al Capone to justice. A brilliant crime fighter and leader, Ness became an American icon whose story still fuels movies, books, TV shows, and comics.

ATF Form processing times have been notoriously slow. This chart tells a story I'm proud to share. The white line represents the average processing times across the four ATF forms Americans submit most often. It shows just how far we have come.
Thanks to dedication of our employees, the average time has dropped from 73 days in FY21 to just 18 days today. Form 4 processing has fallen from 150 days to approximately 18 days.
I'm incredibly proud of the men and women of ATF. Their hard work made this possible. We are not finished; We will keep improving and modernizing, earning the trust of the American people while staying focused on our core mission to reduce violent crime.
ATF is proposing to clarify that “training rounds,” including inert, marking, and simulated-projectile products used for training, do not meet the statutory definition of “ammunition” under the Gun Control Act. These items are therefore not regulated under the GCA or Arms Export Control Act provided the round is not for a firearm. The change provides clear regulatory certainty for manufacturers, importers, and law enforcement suppliers.
