ATF helps drive crime down. New national data shows gun crime is going down. Reports of gun related incidents dropped 12% last year, and ATF’s tools for tracing and analyzing crime guns played a major part in that progress. On this solemn 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we stop to remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives taken in the unimaginable acts of hatred and violence that day.
We honor the victims, the families who still carry the weight of loss, and the first responders who ran toward danger without hesitation. Their courage and sacrifice remain etched in our nation’s memory.

This is the first forensic lab dedicated to DNA recovery from fired cartridge cases. It pairs advanced DNA collection and analysis with high-throughput workflows to quickly generate investigative leads from crime scenes and felon-in-possession cases, linking suspects through national DNA database hits and connecting crimes even when different firearms are used.

ATF is proposing to amend regulatory requirements to submit fingerprints and photographs with firearms applications. Currently, applicants must submit 2”x 2” passport-style photographs and either one or two fingerprint cards, depending on the application type. ATF proposes that all applicants can submit a copy of a photo ID, and just one fingerprint card. Responsible persons under the National Firearms Act would submit one fingerprint card only if needed to facilitate a background check.
