This is what too much of the “gender critical” movement has become. A stranger has just told a mother that her daughter will “probably kill herself” because she is transgender. Not a discussion about women’s rights. Not a debate about safeguarding. Not an argument about biology, prisons, sport or single-sex spaces. Just the deliberate misgendering of another human being followed by the weaponisation of her possible suicide to hurt her mother. And apparently we’re supposed to pretend this is all simply reasonable people expressing legitimate concerns. No. When your response to the existence of a trans woman you’ve never met is to tell her mother that she’ll probably kill herself, you’ve left legitimate debate a very long way behind. People keep asking why I speak out about the increasingly dehumanising rhetoric directed at trans people. This. This is why. Disagree with me. Challenge policy. Debate the law. Argue about sex and gender until the cows come home. But don’t ask me to treat cruelty like this as respectable discourse. It isn’t.
