🇩🇪🇰🇬 A German travel influencer went viral after sharing footage of herself being sexually harassed during a solo trek in Kyrgyzstan. The political and legal realities surrounding sexual assault have changed considerably, something often overlooked in discussions about solo female travel. Historically, Western governments sometimes pressured foreign authorities to act swiftly when their citizens were assaulted abroad, occasionally even resulting in questionable convictions for the sake of appearances. Today, sexual assault has become increasingly politicized across Western societies, potentially weakening the political will to intervene forcefully when similar cases arise abroad. Then there's the legal reality. In Britain, rape law examines whether an accused person reasonably believed consent existed. In other places, rape law instead focuses on proving force, threats, exploitation of a victim's defenselessness or other means of obtaining sex against their will, without the same explicit test of reasonable belief in consent. And to make matters worse, social media algorithms reward influencers for glamorizing remote destinations, often at the expense of their followers' safety.
