Meet 2026 BRIDGS Emergent Scholar Jared Weissman! 👋
Jared Weissman is a PhD candidate at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. He is currently writing a dissertation that focuses on the topic of gun culture tourism in the city of Las Vegas and how it is informed by and influences the broader frame of American gun culture. As a BRIDGS fellow Jared workshopped his dissertation proposal that brought together literature on American gun culture, social theory, and proposed a mixed qualitative methods approach to study gun culture tourism in Las Vegas.
Jared notes that from the experience, “I received feedback that both pushed me to further flesh out my methods and clarify what populations I sought to study, but also reinforcement that my research is meaningful and encouragement to continue writing.”
BRIDGS welcomes all to join the conversation and contribute to elevating the debate on g_ns. Listen to our director Dr. Jennifer Carlson on ways you can elevate the debate.
Meet 2026 BRIDGS Emergent Scholar Armin Sauermann! 👋
Armin Sauermann is a PhD student in Sociology at Washington University in St. Louis whose research focuses on gun culture, political identity, and the citizen-state relationship. His dissertation explores what gun ownership among liberal Americans reveals about how citizens understand their relationship to state power and protection.
As a Fellow, Armin workshopped a paper showing that embeddedness in gun-owning social networks is the strongest predictor of gun ownership, while perceived threat plays a surprisingly minor role.
"BRIDGS was the first time I was in a room full of people who found this work as exciting as I do, and that kind of validation is an enormous motivational boost."
