What was our solution?
First, we took a sample of scientific papers on digital products for autistic users and evaluated them from two aspects:
1. The rigour of the scientific underpinning
2. The level of knowledge about the end-users of the product.
Third, the tech world moves incredibly fast.
In the seven years it took me to apply for funding, create an app, evaluate it in a small randomised controlled trial, and publish the findings, Apple brought out three new iPads and four new iPhones. dart.ed.ac.uk/research/click…
Lots of people realised that digital technologies - websites, smartphone apps, video games - could be useful and beneficial for autistic people.
But the sheer volume of stuff out there was virtually impossible to navigate. It felt like a maze.
We wanted to help.
