As severe weather events become more frequent and intense, infrastructure professionals and leaders face growing pressure to rebuild smarter, more resilient, and more sustainable systems. Ahead of moderating a vision and strategy session at #ASCE2027, @LACoPublicWorks Director Mark Pestrella joined a special edition of ASCE Interchange Live to discuss how resilience-focused rebuilding can reduce risk, strengthen communities, and accelerate recovery after disasters. Watch the full conversation on the #ASCESource, then register to attend ASCE2027: The Infrastructure and Engineering Experience in Philadelphia, March 1-5, 2027: go.asce.org/4s7tsWA.

More than 100 cyberattacks on U.S. water systems have been reported across seven states in recent months. As critical infrastructure becomes increasingly connected, experts say civil engineers must treat cybersecurity as a design requirement from the very beginning of a structure’s life cycle: go.asce.org/4Ba8g6l.

The first municipally developed and owned hydroelectric plant in the United States began operation at the Cedar Falls Hydroelectric Project #OnThisDay in 1904, a pioneering effort that helped lay the foundation for the public power movement. Located in the Cedar River watershed in Washington's Cascade Mountains, the original project featured a rock-filled timber crib diversion dam, a three-mile-long wood stave penstock and two 78-inch steel penstocks carrying water to a wood-framed powerhouse, and two 2,000-hp Pelton impulse wheels that powered 1,200-kW three-phase AC generators. A 37-mile transmission line connected the facility to Seattle at 45 kV, the highest transmission voltage in the U.S. at the time. By January 1905, electricity from Cedar Falls was lighting downtown Seattle. The facility grew from an initial 2,400-kW capacity to a 30-MW operation by 1929 and was designated an ASCE National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 2000. Trace the Cedar Falls Hydroelectric Project back to its beginnings + read a firsthand account from the engineers who first surveyed the site in 1895—free on the #ASCELibrary now through Oct. 21: go.asce.org/4hO5c8w. #VisitASCELandmarks
