One question I see from Americans sometimes is:
“How can Japanese people be so close to America after Hiroshima and Nagasaki?”
I don’t think there’s one simple answer.
Japan remembers what happened. But remembering something and choosing to hate someone forever are two very different things.
After 1945, generations of Japanese people grew up in a country that was rebuilding, changing, and eventually working alongside the very country that had once been its enemy.
At some point, the relationship stopped being about what America and Japan had been to each other, and became about what they could be to each other.
That doesn’t erase history.
It just means history doesn’t have to be the only thing we inherit from it.
Former enemies became allies.
And I think that is one of the most remarkable parts of the modern history of Japan and America.

In Japan, you can finish all the noodles in your ramen and still not be done eating.
You look at the bowl.
There’s still plenty of soup left.
Then you say:
“Kaedama, please.”
And they bring you another serving of noodles.
Not another bowl.
Just noodles.
You drop them straight into the soup you already have.
Same soup.
Fresh noodles.
Round two.
It’s basically a ramen refill, except somehow Japan decided you only needed to refill half of it.
Very Japanese.

There comes a point in life when you stop confusing effort with chasing.
I will make an effort. I will show up.
I will apologize when I'm wrong.
I will fight for people I love.
I will forgive.
I will give second chances.
But I will not chase someone who has decided I am disposable.
I will not repeatedly explain my character to someone committed to misunderstanding it.
And I will never beg another human being to recognize my value.
That's what happens when you've lived long enough to understand that love, friendship, loyalty, and respect have to travel in both directions.
I want people in my life.
I simply won't audition for a place in theirs.
The door isn't locked.
Either way, I'll be fine.

Modern political discourse feels a lot like warning someone about a lion that is going to eat them, only to have them reply “Oh so you have a problem with lions?” “Do lions “scare” you because they're different?” “Are you threatened by the lion because it doesn't look like you?”
Then the lion eats them and you get blamed for not doing enough to prevent the kind of society where lions eat people.

when a houseplant’s leaves turn yellow, nobody yells at the plant.
you don't tell it to 'try harder.' you just realize the pot became too small for its roots and gently move it to a bigger space. i spent years calling myself lazy when my environment was simply suffocating me.

So SCOTUS ruled it was too close to the election to allow USPS to track mail-in ballots but then turned around and said it’s not too close to change the Missouri Congressional map after Missouri voters already voted on this map in their primary and all the ballots have already been printed and mailed!?! 🤦🏻♂️🤬 Make it make sense! There’s nothing Supreme about this Supreme Court 🤦🏻♂️
