Last night at the @batashoemuseum's exhibition launch for "Exhibit A," co-curated by @AMatthewsdavid, I learned that the "sneaker" comes from sneaking around undetected. A great exhibition on footwear and crime and a dive into the speakeasy. Be sure to check it out.

🧶 Weaving generations together is one of the most touching and meaningful parts of a historian’s job. In this X, I want to show you how clothing can be a useful tool to address the ties b/w (grand)mothers and (grand)daughters, but also gender, memory, and (im)material culture.

As crisp as a wind blown beech leaf, the rich brown of this late #1830s day gown is strewn with the self coloured decorative additions that were so popular during this period. I imagine it rustling as sharply as a drift of autumn leaves @KSUMuseum #fashionhistory

Refusing to rewear an outfit once it’s been photographed and posted to social media is wild behavior. Why should it matter if people see the exact same outfit? Someone explain that mindset to me.

The latest issue of @MaterialIntel, a new online publication from @chipstone_org, is all about rubber. I wrote about the Halkett boat, an "extremely clever and ingenious" Victorian rubber boat for explorers that turned into a coat, and vice versa 🛶 ↔️ 🧥materialintelligencemag.org/…

There's a huge uproar in England over the destruction of one majestic tree, the Sycamore Gap, and in Ontario we're about to lose *hundreds* for no reason. There should be a massive outcry.

This little pleated gem is actually a miniature pleated dress, a c1950 reproduction of a late #1940s #JacquesFath couture design. It is a quarter scale, made so that when the pattern was sold to wholesalers, this mini version acted as an exemplar @V_and_A #Fashionhistory

Those sleeves are positively sculptural!
In October 1887, African American photographer James Presley Ball moved to Helena, Montana and set up his studio J. P. Ball & Son. While there, Ball became involved in Helena's political scene, leading to his nomination for the position of county coroner in 1894, which he ultimately chose to decline. This cabinet card from J. P. Ball & Son's studio, dating from 1887 to 1900, presents a captivating portrait of an unidentified woman elegantly dressed in gigot sleeves and a walking skirt, offering a captivating glimpse into the fashion of that era.
