A young girl in a school for black civil rights activists being trained to not react to hair being pulled and smoke blown in her face, 1960.
In 1960, young civil rights activists were trained to endure abuse without reacting. many of them teenagers and childrenāwere taught how to remain calm while facing physical and verbal harassment. The goal was preparation for sit-ins, marches, and protests where hostility was expected.

Yes, pleaseā¼ļø But hereās what would need to happen to abolish the Electoral College.
1. The House: Two-thirds must vote to amend the Constitution.
2. The Senate: Two-thirds must approve.
3. The States: At least 38 of 50 states must ratify the amendment.
Do the math: Thatās 290 House members, 67 senators, and 38 states. Not an easy lift.
The EC is outdated and rooted in racism. It was designed to protect the political power of slave states. And nearly 240 years later, weāre still using this bullshit system.

Met a voter who happens to be a Republican for Pearson! He refuses to participate in destroying our democracy.
Trump-endorsed Brent Taylor supports expensive and illegal wars, driving up costs for all of us.
We must put everyday people first, no matter what party.

America, Land of Hypocrisy. Where qualified black people can be called DEI. Yet, an unqualified white person can achieve so much through mediocrity. Seemingly failing upward. No doubt, we'll find that she's been hired on some board of directors or a corporate job that she isn't qualified for.

All of the centuries of Indigenous resistance to White colonization should never be forgotten and should always taught in U.S. schools because Native Americans were the good guys in that long fight for freedomāso many brave people fought the good fight for their land and liberty!

Ax Handle Saturday is not just a Jacksonville story. Itās a national reminder: segregation was enforced not only by law, but by organized white violence, official indifference, and youth courage that refused to break.

The legacy lives on through the voices of survivors like Rodney Hurst, Alton Yates, and Nat Glover, who continue to remind the city of what happened when justice was demanded ā and violently denied.

Today, Ax Handle Saturday is recognized as a turning point in Jacksonvilleās civil rights history. A marker now stands in James Weldon Johnson Park, honoring the youth who refused to accept segregation ā and the brutality they endured for standing up for what was right.(cont)

The Jacksonville Journal buried the story. TV stations ignored it. For decades, survivorsā testimonies were the primary record. In short, there is no footage that exists of this horrific incidentāsave a few private film clips. For the uninformed folksāthis was by design.(cont)

In total:
⢠50ā65+ injured
⢠62ā100+ arrested, 48 of them Black
⢠0 white attackers charged
The imbalance was deliberate ā a reflection of Jacksonvilleās political leadership and police culture at the time. Local media downplayed the violence. (cont)

Clarence Sears(below), an FBI informant inside the Klan during the 1950s and 1960s, warned federal agents two days earlier that an attack was planned. Despite his report, Jacksonville authorities took no preventive action. Yesāthey allowed the Klan to attack Black children.(cont)

When police still refused to act, a Black street group known as the Boomerangs stepped in to defend the students. Only then did police intervene ā to arrest the Black defenders, not the white mob. It the was typical reaction of law enforcement during the Civil Rights era. (cont)

One White ally, Richard Charles Parker (below at a meeting), was part of the NAACP Youth Councilā attempted to shield Black youth. Police arrested him, beat him while in custody, and sentenced him to a road gang ā a stark contrast to the lack of arrests among attackers.(cont)
