If your visiting hedgehogs have disappeared into hibernation - well done! 🥰 Hedgehogs will only attempt to enter the hibernation process if they are healthy and have enough brown fat to see them though winter. Thanks to you and your kind provisions of safe food and clean water they have reached that happy state. Hedgehogs occasionally rise from hibernation for a top up, so please keep providing food and clean water all through the winter. Covering the biscuits with a saucer will keep dry cat food fresh for around 3 days, before it starts losing its crunch, aroma, and nutritional quality. Here's dear sweet Anya, who rose from her hibernation last night for a top-up snack, before going back to bed. She has been in hibernation since 1st September. The babies she gave birth to here in June dispersed when they were old enough, but sweet Anya decided the maternity wing of the winter cabin makes a nice home, thanks very much, and has stayed.😁 Anya's history: xitter.cf/HedgehogCabin/status/2…
Darling Anya who arrived so terribly sick has responded really well to her treatments and is now in tip-top health. She is due to go home tomorrow. Well, she was.... As you can see from my bodycam footage, Anya gave birth this morning.❤️ I'd lifted her bed box out, cleaned her pen, and was about to open the box to weigh and medicate her when I noticed the wet lid lining. From experience I've seen birthing fluids evaporate with mum's body warmth then condensate on the lid, wetting the lining, so I went very carefully. What we catch a quick glimpse of here is a baby she's literally just given birth to. Hoglets are born with soft white spines, which are hidden beneath a fluid-filled layer of skin to protect the mother during birth. This is what you see here. Within 1 to 2 hours this protective skin shrinks and retracts, allowing the baby's white spines to break through and become visible. From now on sweet Anya will be left hands off, undisturbed in the seclusion of her pen, allowing her to bond with her new babies in peaceful solitude. I don't live in the middle of the New Forest. This is a tiny triangle of woods at the end of my road. But the water I put out there every night is the only water available for miles. Despite some recent rain, the ponds, rivers and streams are all still dry from the drought. So these poor deer, along with badgers, foxes, squirrels, hedgehogs, and all manner of birds are forced to travel miles each night to get to this water. It's a lifesaver for them. Please be a lifesaver for your local wildlife. A dish of water in the back and front - even if you don't have a garden - may mean the difference between life and death to some poor struggling animal. Please keep it full, and keep it clean, every night. Please don't give up, it may take a while for the wildlife to find you. Every single hedgehog through these hospital doors this year has been suffering from dehydration. It's heartbreaking, hearing these dear sweet animals gasp their last breath, knowing that if someone, somewhere, only turned on their tap and put out some water this precious life would have been saved. Our wildlife are dying of thirst. In this green and pleasant land. Weather and conditions have changed, and we need to change too, and help out those less fortunate than ourselves. It's such a small effort, for such a huge reward.❤️‍🩹

I can’t quite believe darling Jennifer finishes her treatment tomorrow & will be ready for her next adventure. From a tiny 102g hoglet to a beautiful thriving 645g juvenile, oh my - she melts my heart - just look at that face. God speed darling girl, stay safe ❤️🦔❤️ #hedgehog
I wasn’t expecting a message from my neighbour to let me know she had found a hoglet wandering on my drive way! Meet Jennifer, this darling baby is just 102g and approximately 3 weeks old. Sadly no mum around. What a cutie, I’m so glad she was found as I wasn’t at home 🙈.

This dear little boy is Loxie. At just 200g he should still be with mum. Loxie was found in a lovely🦔friendly garden where food&water is provided all yr. round but sadly he’s full of lungworm, possibly passed on from mum. Loxie’s treatment is underway, but he’s had a tough wk.😢

We’re allowed to drink. We’re allowed to be out after dark. We’re allowed to be alone. Men are not allowed to be predators. If you can’t control your urge to assault, you need to be in a cage.

This is dear little Owen right now, this afternoon, still eating little and often, just the way a patient recovering from starvation should. I'm so pleased to say he has survived all his antiparasitic treatments, and will have his last injection tomorrow. But better still - out of the blue his finder called! I had no way of contacting him, as he was working when he brought Owen in and was in such a rush he didn't leave his details, so I was delighted that he rang. Paul actually lives in Northamptonshire - a very long way from where I am in Hampshire. But he said he would make the trip down to pick up Owen when he is recovered, and give him a home in his garden that is open to countryside, and where other hedgehogs regularly visit and are fed and watered year round. I am so happy that this dear brave boy, once starving and so gravely ill, will now have a happy home! He needs a couple more weeks of recovery time here, to build up his strength, but his outlook is bright.😊 Owen's history: xitter.cf/HedgehogCabin/status/2…
🔊This poor boy is Owen. Owen's finder is a delivery driver. Driving along a busy highway he noticed traffic ahead of him diverting and swerving around something in the road, so he slowed. He saw Owen, thought he was dead, then saw what the other drivers must have seen - this poor darling flinching each time another bird came down to peck at him. Thankfully this busy delivery driver's heart was full of compassion and he stopped, scooped poor Owen up off the road, wrapped him in some bubble wrap and brought him straight here. If not for the kindness of this man, Owen would have suffered an agonising, terrifying death. I'm so grateful for his act of mercy. As you can hear, the poor darling is in acute respiratory distress, struggling for every breath, so his prognosis is still poor. But for now he is safe, warm, free from fear, and having every medication possible to help him overcome this lung infection (secondary to parasite invasion). Seriously ill hedgehogs suffer from hypothermia. This is a stage of dying where the blood is redirected to the vital organs, to keep them supplied with oxygen for as long as possible, leaving the rest of the body feeling cold. So the hedgehog seeks warmth. Tarmac and paving holds the sun's heat longer than soil or grass, so these poor animals often drag themselves onto a road, for the residue heat the surface retains. Please remember this, and if you see a hedgehog in the road who isn't obviously dead, pull over and check, when it's safe to do so.

Anyone who thinks that has lost their humanity. I feel it’s our duty to help the vulnerable. And all animals are vulnerable.

I am undone. Just look at this little kid. Owen hasn't moved, has had nothing to eat or drink, for 8 days. And then this happened last night. He licked his lips, took a few tremulous steps, then ate, oh-so-slowly, for 19 minutes.🥹 What a little warrior. (In case you're wondering - his spines are all sticking up from where I have administered a twice daily bolus of fluids, to keep him alive, and he's in such a poor state that his skin has lost all elasticity. But as he gradually absorbs nourishment again his skin will recover and his spines will lay flat again). Owen's history: xitter.cf/HedgehogCabin/status/2… And: xitter.cf/HedgehogCabin/status/2…
Poor darling Owen is still critical, still not eating, and only still alive because of the fluids and drugs I'm injecting him with twice a day. He's using every ounce of energy to keep living, and can't afford to spend any on digesting food. He has more internal parasites than I've seen in a live hedgehog for many years. Aside from a huge burden of deadly lungworm, putting him in acute respiratory distress, and a massive gutful of roundworm, leaching any nutrients left in his frail little body, Owen is full of lethal fluke. Below are three microscopic images I took from a sample of the tiniest blob of poo Owen produced. These are three adult fluke. It's very rare to see one. But that tiny blob contained three. I shudder to think how many more are inside his body. Inside each fluke's body you can see the eggs it is producing. Fluke are hermaphrodites, so produce self-fertilised eggs. The golden coloured ones are ready to hatch. Just one is enough to tip the balance and kill Owen. Adult flukes live in the digestive tract, liver and bile ducts. They have strong suckers and physically bite into the delicate mucosal lining to feed on tissue and blood. They literally eat the living liver. This causes sharp, agonising pain. Even without consuming enough liver tissue to cause organ failure on its own, in a wild animal whose body is already being starved by roundworms and suffocated by lungworms, that added physical stress can easily trigger a fatal heart attack or total immune collapse. Owen's life is on a knife edge. Only time will tell. I am so touched by all the loving well-wishes this dear little boy has received. If only he knew how many people are rooting for him.🥹 Please do remember to wash your outside dishes and baths well, at least once a week, preferably daily. It's likely Owen got fluke from contaminated water.

Poor Juno at just 200g is in a critical condition. Hypothermic, dehydrated & unable to keep any food or water down. If that’s not enough this poor baby has an injury to her right hind foot & has tested positive for lungworm😢. Her treatment is intensive, I hope I can save her 😢

I'm getting lots of calls from people who have decided to clean out their garage, outbuilding or shed and have found a 'sleeping' hedgehog. Firstly, please leave them there. Put everything back as it was, as gently and quietly as possible, and walk away. Whatever you wanted to do that day is not worth killing a precious endangered animal for. Because of the false autumn this year (the drought traumatised trees into dropping their leaves early, as a survival tactic, and the smell of those decaying leaves is an 'autumn is here' trigger for hedgehogs), a lot are hibernating early. Hibernation isn't a sleep. It's a lowered metabolism. The heartbeat is lowered dramatically from 190 beats per minute to around 15. A breath is taken only once every few minutes. Their body temperature is dropped from 35C to around 5C. Systems not needed for life are shut down. A hibernating hedgehog burns just 1 calorie per day. Isn't that incredible? They still have a sleeping and waking cycle, and are perfectly aware and can hear, but are stiff, rigid, and cannot move. Trapped and helpless in that near-death state. It takes weeks of preparation to achieve this incredible transformation. It cannot be instantly undone. Even the fastest rising, by a young fit hedgehog, takes about 12 hours, before the heart is beating fast enough and there's enough oxygen in the bloodstream to allow muscles to move again. If a hedgehog in a state of hibernation is terrified (by being disturbed by a human) and is panicked into trying to rise too fast, the strain can be too much for him and he'll have a heart attack. It's so dangerous to disturb them that it's actually against the law - and goodness knows our wildlife have few enough laws protecting them. But leaving them in peace is more than obeying the law. It's human kindness. After destroying their own natural habitat, it’s the least we can do - to allow them safe passage through the winter, in whatever space of ours they choose to inhabit. And they chose to inhabit your space because it was undisturbed. Unused. Just as we can smell when a house is empty, hedgehogs can smell when something has lain undisturbed - be it a roll of carpet, a bag of old clothes, or a sack of compost. Undisturbed means safety to a desperate animal. These poor displaced gentle creatures take the chance that small space will stay undisturbed, long enough for them to survive winter. So if you're having a clear out and find a hedgehog please let them stay in peace, undisturbed. Put any covering back just how you found it. Please don't be tempted to add to it, to 'make them more comfy'. 🥰 It's lovely that you feel that way, but the hedgehog will just see it as a predator making their nest unsafe. If there's no access to the building that you know of, please leave the door open a little, or make a cat-flap size hole in the door. And leave a clean dish of water outside the building, and a dish of dry cat or dog food outside in the evenings ( a complete food that has meat as the first listed ingredient). If they are too frightened to continue hibernating there, they will use up a great deal of precious stored energy moving on, and will need to replenish that. And then enjoy the rare privilege, that this precious endangered wild animal trusted you and your garden to be at his most vulnerable.❤️

Don't worry if your resident hedgehog comes out to splat outside her house during the day. Healthy hogs may come out from their nest for a breather on very hot days, but will always stay nearby in the shade, under cover. Hedgehogs only have sweat pores on the skin of their tummy, where blood flow is closest to the surface. Splatting - laying their tummy on a cool surface - will lower the temperature of the passing blood, thus cooling the hedgehog. Leaving a dish of water in the border, tucked under the shrubbery, will make it safer and easier for them to stay hydrated.❤️

If that a dish of mealworms or calciworms next to the food? Please never give those to hedgehogs, they are extremely harmful and cause a horrible painful death. Please feed only complete cat or dog food. Any type or flavour, as long as meat is the first listed ingredient. Dry complete kitten food like Iams, Smilla or Purina One is perfect. 🥰 It's *complete* so contains all needed nutrients, no need to add anything else. A dish of kitten food next to a dish of clean water is all you need. Thank you for so kindly providing.❤️

Something lovely and happy to start the week - baby Odette is now walking perfectly normally!😍 She's no longer dragging her leg and is planting that foot solidly. Her gait is now normal, not even a trace of a limp. What a miracle!🥹 She's still too small to release and while she's here growing she'll have internal parasite treatments, so she'll return to the wild in tip top shape. Odette's history:xitter.cf/HedgehogCabin/status/2…
Despite claims to the contrary, snap rat traps don't conveniently land on the neck, killing quickly. More often than not they land on the legs, or one paw, or in baby hedgehog Odette's case, across the pelvis. It takes days for the trapped animal to die, in agony, starving, dehydrating. The will to live is strong in all animals and the trapped struggle for their lives, sometimes degloving entire paws or feet. It's a barbaric, utterly inhumane device. Little Odette (named after the crippled swan in Swan Lake), only 320g, was spotted by a lovely lady on her way to work, who called for advice. If not for this compassionate woman's swift actions this poor animal would have suffered a slow, torturous, agonising death. Once here, I saw the rat trap was not legal, the apertures were too big (the maximum for a tunnel type trap is 51cm, and this was 65cm), and my keys didn't fit so I called the company and they kindly sent someone over from Surrey. There's no sound on this camera, and my gesticulating is me telling the man to be gentle (he'd assumed the hedgehog was dead, and was shocked she had survived and was still alive), and that the size of the entry hole is a legislative violation - making the harm done to Odette a wildlife crime. Miraculously I couldn't feel any breaks, and her circulation is intact. There's a lot of bruising, swelling and tenderness, but although it's only been one full day, I'm cautiously optimistic for dear baby Odette's recovery.
