It warms our professional lipspeaking hearts to read such positive comments about the difference our skill can make in a person’s life. Well done to that lipspeaker, what a wonderful reminder of the impact our skills can have. @RNID @NRCPD #SpokenWordsMadeVisible
You know you're in the right job when a pure #Lipreader writes to say, 'You were fantastic today and made such a difference to my work... I will definitely want your support again.’ Could a #Lipspeaker make a profound positive impact on your work? #Lipspeaking #Lipreading #Deaf

Richard Gray’s HC Register widened access/raised standards. Glenda Bateman’s founding of the ALS 35 years ago gave lipspeakers a professional voice. Lipspeakers are recognised across public services/workplaces & are listed on @NRCPD our journey continues! #SpokenWordsMadeVisible

Charles Mardell (deaf - 22 yrs as Hearing Concern’s Secretary-General) could easily follow Glenda Bateman’s lipspeaking & championed its growth. Glenda then founded the Association of Lipspeakers (ALS). In the 1960s, demand led to formal training ! #SpokenWordsMadeVisible

Lipspeaking was not only in the clubs. By 1949, Oxford’s ENT dept. was running lipreading classes, thanks to Gavin & Felicity Livingstone & hearing therapist Kathleen Jagger. Club competitions grew into regional/ national contests. Many lipreading teachers were also lipspeakers!

The Lipspeaking story continued - A small idea was about to make a big difference. Word spread through regional rallies of hard of hearing clubs & BATOD, where lipspeaking was seen in action. Members took it home & a new service began to blossom. 🌱#SpokenWordsMadeVisible @NRCPD

Over 70 yrs ago, In 1948, a new communication skill emerged in Darlington. Bill Snowden & Muriel Shepherd developed lipspeaking as a “platform skill” to ensure everyone could take part in local hard of hearing club meetings. This laid the foundations for lipspeaking in England!

Great to see such a strong turnout at Manchester Deaf Centre on Friday for the survey on communication access to healthcare. Lipearders, BSL, SSE & DeafBlind shared valuable feedback. Some really useful insights gained! @MCRDeafCentre #NHS #Equality #HearOurVoices #DeafAccess

The life of a Lipspeaker. We watch, we listen, we catch every word, making sure every voice can be seen and heard. Quietly there, making things clear, turning spoken words into access, not fear. Yes it's Bank Holiday w/e. But, we're still on duty... lipspeakers love their work!

Lipspeaker feedback: Continuity matters. The patient said having the same lipspeaker regularly offered more than familiarity. It reduced anxiety & gave them greater confidence during appointments. It isn't just about access. Continuity can support wellbeing & mental health too

Here’s hoping this expose helps halt this unacceptable infringement of Deaf people’s right to make informed medical choices through their chosen communication professionals. BBC News - Deaf patient given wrong jab due to sign language error, report says - bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn8n…
