Former German intelligence chief August Hanning has been arrested on suspicion of espionage. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office announced the news. Hanning is suspected of, among other things, attempted treason and acting as an intelligence agent for another country. According to reports by several German media outlets, the case is not linked to Russia. Hanning headed the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005 and subsequently served as a state secretary at the Federal Ministry of the Interior. DW.
