As AI becomes more capable, I'm focused on questions around the pace and implications of progress, and how they should inform the strategy of OpenAI and across the field. I asked Aleksander to come back to OpenAI to work with me on these topics. I value his judgment and am glad to have him on the team again.
Personal update: Turns out that what I thought was leaving OpenAI became more of a sabbatical. When I left a few months ago, I felt that the most important thing to focus on was making AI more useful to people. But we’ve since entered a different regime of AI progress. One in which getting the safety and security challenges of increasingly capable AI right has to become a central priority. So I’ll be returning to OpenAI, joining @merettm to help chart a path through these challenges. There’s much work to do, so let’s get going.

If we want to continue progress in science, we must be prepared to acknowledge that the correct description of nature will eventually simply be too complicated for humans to understand. I do not think it is wise to make human understanding a requirement. AI is the way forward.

Mathematician Terence Tao: "we're seeing the end of the romantic era of mathematics, the age of heroes. we're moving into an industrial era where math becomes large-scale, done in big teams like the other sciences" We're entering, rather unwillingly, a new era where exciting new things are possible, but some things are being lost

Now I can finally share it: I’ve spent the past week traveling across Europe with NVIDIA, covering all their Build a Claw events on the ground. The highlight was something I could barely have imagined: spending almost an hour talking with Jensen Huang himself about everything from AI and robotics to quantum computing. After the birth of my son and marrying my wife, this was probably the best day of my life. The full video and some teaser is coming soon: Jensen Huang x Chubby in Stockholm. (Ps: yes, it’s real, not AI generated. @nvidia)

Alexandr Wang gets it. The real promise of AGI isn’t better coding agents. It’s giving people their lives back. Imagine AI handling almost everything you have to do, leaving you free to spend your time on what you actually want to do. That’s the future worth building. Not a world where everyone works harder, but one where work is no longer a necessity. And Meta wants to bring that future to billions of people.

I have now lost the last bit of respect I had left for Terence Tao! This is one of the most ridiculous arguments I have ever heard. He also clearly has little understanding of biomedicine. There are many drugs whose mechanisms of action we still don’t fully understand. In fact, even aspirin was used for decades before scientists established its principal mechanism of action! Currently used lithium drug still has no known mechanism of action! If you were a cancer patient or seriously ill, would you really care whether scientists fully understood how a drug worked if it could save your life? How can such brilliant people fall so deep into the abyss of coping? I suspect we will see much more of this as AI continues to challenge established intellectual hierarchies.
This is a slide from Terence Tao's 'Math 2.0' public lecture yesterday evening at Caltech. I am highly confident that, if the cure actually worked, almost any Stage 4 cancer patient would tell you that human comprehension of its mechanism is completely irrelevant to them.

We’re making interesting progress here. Digital Optimus can play about halfway through the Diablo campaign so far just by looking at the screen like a human. Skill at Counter-Strike and other fast games is good too. League is also in training. Goal is to generalize across all games.

i have a simple proposal for Terence Tao what's stopping him and his circle of mathematicians from doing math their own way and leaving AI alone? don't read the proofs, don't use AI, pretend it doesn't exist keep doing math their own way but instead of limiting themselves it seems they want to limit everyone else from using that knowledge

👉🏻 OpenAI just published hundreds of AI-generated mathematical results. 24 hours later, a group of mathematicians called for a boycott. The Association for Human Mathematics says OpenAI’s massive release is: “Not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power.” And its response goes beyond criticism. It is urging mathematicians to stop working with OpenAI. The fight over AI-generated mathematics is becoming a fight over who controls the future of scientific research.

This is a deep human tragedy, a Lee Sedol moment for an entire profession. Please don't gloat, for soon the models will also be coming for *you*. (Oh, you think your output is difficult to verify? Your work requires interaction with the physical world? You're convinced that there's some context to what you do that the machines can't reach? These are fig leaves, my friend; you have maybe a few years left at most.) The rage against OpenAI is pointless, of course. In a year or two, these kinds of mathematical results will be obtainable in 15 minutes by anyone with a $20/month subscription or access to an open-source model. You can't hide from it. Superintelligence is here. Everyone who does knowledge work (and I should have probably just said "everyone" - it's cleaner) should now be engaging in deep personal ruminations on the meaning of his/her life. It can't come from "being the best at what you do" anymore. For many of us, there's still time to pivot.

People are surprised that AI is finding weird unelegant maths results like this. I think there is a plausible explanation. Maths (and adjacent disciplines like physics and comp sci) had elegant results so far because humans are biased towards elegant solutions. I think this bias is due to how human minds work. We have a pretty small context window, and we are only able to find solutions that are relatively elegant. This gave us the impression that maths and the universe are elegant. Maybe they are not, and we are now finding out because we have intelligences that can work with much more complex solutions.
You can do Fourier transforms in O(N log(N)^0.9999999999999) time. Fuck this gay chud universe
