Don't call it a comeback! 🌊 This new @NatureGeosci Comment I co-authored with @scottstgeorge, and @JudithAAvila explains how updated risk guidelines offer a new opportunity to apply lessons from paleoflood hydrology to judge the odds of future floods. nature.com/articles/s41561-0…

After years of scientific research, the @ForestService 2022 report documented the need for a mineral withdrawal to protect the Rainy River watershed from toxic sulfide-ore mining. @SecRollins: your "careful review" didn't even include checking how to spell the watershed's name.
.@SecretaryBurgum and I have been working together to unleash American Energy and today we are taking another step to ensure we are getting back in the mining and energy development game. Today, @USDA is proud to announce that we are initiating the process to cancel the mineral withdrawal in the Rainey River watershed on the Superior National Forest. After careful review, including extensive public input, the US Forest Service has enough information to know the withdrawal was never needed. We look forward to working with Sec. Burgum to pursue American Energy Dominance and reverse the costly and disastrous policies of the Biden Administration.

What “careful review”? The one that showed this kind of mining nearly always pollutes? Or the one that showed that mining in this place could irreversibly pollute the Boundary Waters?

Good news for protecting the #BWCA and clean water from toxic sulfide mining! But the fight is far from over. Thank you @SenTinaSmith for your leadership fighting for clean water protections along w/ @BettyMcCollum04 startribune.com/federal-budg…

Today marks a victory in our fight to protect the Boundary Waters. Buried deep in President Trump and Republicans’ Big Beautiful Bill was a provision that gave a foreign mining company full permission to build a copper-nickel sulfide mine right on the doorstep of the Boundary Waters. I vowed to do everything in my power to protect this precious place. Today, I am relieved to announce that we were successful in forcing Republicans to drop this language attacking the Boundary Waters from the bill.      However, the fight is far from over. Donald Trump and House Republicans are determined to revoke the protections I worked to put in place and that Minnesotans have made clear they support. Republicans want to sell off our public lands to the highest bidder, and the Boundary Waters is no exception.   We need to pass my bill to permanently protect the Boundary Waters from sulfide mining. Minnesotans who love the Boundary Waters and want it to be there for our children and grandchildren need to continue to organize and use their voices. This win shows that when we speak out and stand strong, together we have the power to stop this.

Thank you Senator Smith for your leadership on this issue!! 💪🏻🛶
We need to fight with every tool we have to protect the Boundary Waters, one of America’s greatest wilderness areas. That’s why I’m introducing the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection Act.

Today, I’m re-introducing the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act. The BWCA is a national treasure that must be protected, but it's under dire threat from Donald Trump and Republicans who wish to allow toxic copper-sulfide mining in the region. 🧵

Today, President Trump will issue a series of Executive Orders that deny the climate emergency facing our country in favor of a phony “energy emergency”. These performative acts show the pervasive influence that the fossil fuel industry will have in the United States over the next four years. But make no mistake, the global Sustainability Revolution is unstoppable. As was the case in 2017, withdrawing the US from the Paris Agreement is a shortsighted abdication of leadership that will only serve to put our nation at a disadvantage. Clinging to the industries of the past instead of embracing the industries of the future may boost the short-term profits of fossil fuel companies, but it will come at the expense of the broader American economy - including American workers who risk being left behind. This is the first of what will be many attempts to ignore reality and try to stall the world’s unstoppable and irreversible move to a clean energy economy. But these proclamations are not reflective of our political and economic reality. These efforts to roll back progress – particularly the hugely popular clean energy investments in the Inflation Reduction Act – will be met with opposition from both political parties. That’s why, in the coming weeks, months, and years, climate leaders and activists must not be deterred or distracted. From extreme weather disasters like Hurricane Helene and the still burning Los Angeles wildfires, to the growing number of climate refugees, to competitiveness in the global economy, the climate crisis will have profound consequences for the United States over the next four years. If the new Administration won’t lead on this issue, it is up to all of us. Now is the time for Governors, Mayors, business leaders, investors, and activists to put their heads down and do the work that will advance the climate solutions our nation and the world so urgently need. We were able to keep up the pace of climate action during the first Trump Administration, and it is urgent that we take up the mantle once again.

The science shows sulfide-ore copper mining pollution would harm the pristine waters of the BWCAW. A bill up in the House today would undo all of the progress we've made to #SaveTheseWaters. I spoke out against it because future generations deserve to experience this place.

Minnesota’s crown jewel made the @nytimes 52 places to go in 2024 list! The Boundary Waters should be off limits to toxic copper-sulfide mining. That’s why I introduced the Boundary Waters Permanent Protection Act to protect our wilderness for generations to come. #SaveTheBWCA
