AGFโs Group Director of Programmes Nishdeep Sethi joined an expert panel at the recent Agriculture and Food Systems Transformation Summit #AFSS2026 in Nairobi, Kenya. Alongside leaders from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Kenya's State Department for Trade and the Kenya Development Corporation (KDC_KE, she explored scalable solutions for expanding affordable capital from farm to export.
Officiating the Summit, H.E. the President, Dr. William Samoei Ruto, PhD highlighted the power of Public-Private partnerships (PPPs) in driving sustainable growth. AGF was honoured to partner with ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐๐ค ๐๐๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ to deliver the event.

At AGF, agriculture is a key development pillar, and Kenya shows why. The economy grew 4.6% in 2026, with agriculture, forestry and fishing delivering 11.4% of that growth, making it the countryโs second-largest economic driver. The sector also supports over 354,000 formal wage earners and nearly 14% of private-sector jobs.
Together, we are bridging the financing gap and empowering agricultural transformation across the region.

๐ ๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐น๐๐๐,โ a book authored by AGFโs Board Member Richard Marney and Philipp Waeber, CFA, a practical guide to understanding and managing risk when investing in Emerging Markets, including Africa.
AGFโs Group Chairman Felix Adahi BIKPO commended the authors for their work, highlighting the importance of creating a โrisk manualโ for navigating uncertainties while investing in emerging markets.
Constant N'ZI, our Group CEO who wrote the book's foreword, praised the authors for bringing the question of risk to life, an approach that closely reflects AGF's own mandate.
The book authors presented the ๐๐ง๐ฏ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซโ๐ฌ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฆ๐๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค,ย which offers a structured approach to assessing country risk across four interconnected dimensions:
๐ ๐๐ง๐๐จ๐ฐ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ: Natural resources, human capital, geography, and demographics.
๐ฆ ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐ฌ: Institutional quality, governance, infrastructure, and financial systems.
๐งญ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐๐ฑ๐ญ: Evolving domestic and macroeconomic dynamics.
๐น ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ฌ: Long-term economic performance and investment stability.
A key highlight of the framework is the conceptual alignment of the investment landscape to weather (short-term economic shocks), winds (policy and reform trajectories), and currents (structural endowments and enablers).
๐๐ก๐ ๐ค๐๐ฒ ๐ญ๐๐ค๐๐๐ฐ๐๐ฒ: prepare for the weather, watch the winds, and align your investments with the currents, because they ultimately shape returns. While natural resources and human capital form the foundation of any economy, their potential can only be fully realized through robust enabling environments.
All this was brought to life by key moderation of an expert panel by Njeri .M. Ngaruiya an AGF board member and Catherine Nyaga-Mbithi ,who represented the Institute of Risk Management Africa (IRM - Africa).
This aligns directly with AGFโs mission. Through guarantee facilities and risk-sharing mechanisms, we help partner financial institutions lend with greater confidence to SMEs, strengthen financial systems and broaden access to finance. In doing so, we help shift the currents themselves, empowering the private sector to drive sustainable economic growth across Africa.

The panel discussion at the AGF Blended Finance Dialogue identified three critical mismatches between how agrifood businesses operate and how finance is often structured:
๐พ Tenor : Agrifood businesses operate around seasonal production and cash-flow cycles, while conventional repayment structures do not always reflect these realities.
๐ Collateral : Viable businesses, particularly women and youth-led enterprises, may lack the traditional collateral required by lenders, even where their businesses demonstrate the ability to repay.
๐ก Product design : Financing solutions need to respond to the business model, cash flows and value chains of MSEs, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
The discussion also highlighted practical ways these gaps can be addressed:
๐น Look beyond collateral
๐น Make better use of data
๐น Strengthen financial institutions
๐น Build more finance-ready businesses
๐น Think beyond the programme, for sustainability
Ultimately, the panel reinforced that the question is not only whether finance is available, but whether it is structured in a way that works for the businesses it is intended to serve. Blended finance should not simply make finance less risky. It should help make finance more accessible, affordable, appropriate and sustainable.
That is where the opportunity for FinRISE lies; helping bridge the gaps between capital, financial institutions and the realities of Africaโs agrifood businesses.

Africaโs agrifood financing challenge is not simply about having more capital. It is about making finance work better for the businesses that need it most.
This was a central message from the AGF Blended Finance Dialogue, convened on the sidelines of the Africa Food Systems Forum 2026 in Kigali, where ecosystem partners explored how the FinRISE blended finance can help unlock greater investment in Africaโs agrifood sector.
The conversation underscored that closing Africaโs agrifood financing gap requires more than capital alone. It calls for better risk-sharing, stronger financial institutions and solutions that respond to the realities of underserved micro and small enterprises, particularly those operating in rural areas and led by women and young people.
Through FinRISE, AGF and Mastercard Foundation are combining funded guarantees, concessional liquidity and capacity development to address both sides of the financing equation. That is strengthening financial service providers, while helping agrifood businesses become more investment ready.
The ambition is clear: move beyond conversations about the financing gap and create the conditions for more sustainable financing to reach more businesses, at greater scale. The goal is for Africa to have more inclusive finance, more sustainable businesses and more opportunities for its agri-food sector.

Our Group Director of Programmes, Nishdeep Sethi joined the โBacking Youth-Led Agro-businessesโ session at the recently concluded #AFSForum2026 to reflect on what it would take to help more youth-led agribusinesses move from promising ideas to sustainable, job-creating businesses.
The discussion highlighted a critical reality: finance remains an important enabler, but it cannot work in isolation. Young entrepreneurs also need the right skills, supportive ecosystems, market opportunities, infrastructure and partnerships to build and scale viable businesses.
This reflects AGFโs broader commitment to unlocking finance for Africaโs agrifood sector, working with financial institutions and development partners to address financing barriers and create greater opportunities for youth businesses across agricultural value chains.
For AGF, this means supporting approaches that help financial institutions better serve underserved businesses while strengthening the enterprises themselves to become more resilient, investment- and credit-ready. For ecosystem partners, it means moving beyond commitments to practical investments and partnerships that give young people the tools and opportunities to build sustainable businesses and create jobs.
As Africa works to transform its agrifood systems, backing its young entrepreneurs must be central to that transformation.

Tolulope Babajide, Programme Coordinator, FinRISE at AGF joined an inspiring panel on โFrom Women-led Enterprise to Investment and Scaleโ at the #AfricaFoodSystemsForum2026. The session brought together women entrepreneurs and ecosystem players to discuss the realities of accessing capital and growing businesses.
Three reflections stood out:
๐น We need to leverage private capital. Public and development finance alone cannot meet the scale of financing required. Unlocking private capital and creating the right conditions for investors and financial institutions to back women-led businesses is critical.
๐น Women are strong borrowers. Evidence continues to show that women tend to be reliable in repayment of loans, reinforcing the case for financial institutions to view women-led enterprises not simply through a risk lens, but as a significant investment opportunity.
๐น Africaโs economies are deeply powered by womenโs businesses. From agriculture and food processing to trade and services, women entrepreneurs are already driving economic activity across the continent. The opportunity now is to ensure they have the capital, networks and support needed to move from operating to scaling.
Through FinRISE, AGF is working with partners to help unlock greater access to finance for women and youth-led micro and small enterprises in the agrifood sector.
The question is no longer whether women businesses can grow. It is whether our financial systems are ready to invest in their growth.

๐พ How do we mobilise more capital for Africaโs agri-food businesses?
At the Africa Food Systems Forum 2026 in Kigali, AGF Group CEO Constant Nโzi joined the Deals & Financing: Scaling Agri-food Investments from Blended Finance to Breakthrough Deals session, spotlighting the role of SME lending in driving greater investment in Africaโs food systems.
One of the key messages from the discussion was: To scale financing, we must first build a strong pipeline of investment-ready SMEs. Having a viable business idea does not necessarily mean that an SME is credit-ready. This is where technical assistance and credit-readiness support become critical.
By combining these interventions with access to finance, AGF has been able to build a stronger pipeline of bankable SMEs and, ultimately, mobilise significant financing.
๐ฐ USD 6.8 billion in loans has already been mobilised to African SMEs through AGFโs guarantee ecosystem, delivering a leverage factor of 25 times the capital raised since inception. While these numbers are impressive in terms of volumes of SME loans, relative to Africaโs SME financing gap of USD 421 billion, this translates to approximately 1.5%. Therefore we still have a lot of work to do.
๐ฏ AGFโs next milestone: raising USD 500 million in capital by the end of 2027, building towards a USD 1 billion capital raise by 2030.
As Constant put it, โAGF is aggressively raising more capital. This will help us to scale, double the volume of SME loans mobilised and make a meaningful dent on Africaโs SME financing gap and deepen our impact across the continent.
The message is clear: scaling Africaโs agri-food sector will require more capital, stronger partnerships and financing solutions that enable local financial institutions to lend at scale.
