🌿 Defending the Amazon means protecting those who defend their territories and rights.
Across Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, Indigenous Peoples and human rights and environmental defenders face serious risks amid a structural crisis driven by illicit economies, extractive expansion, weak state presence, and the erosion of civic space.
Between July 2024 and May 2026, #AmazonFrontlines supported 39 urgent situations of risk through its rapid-response mechanism, responding to critical gaps in existing protection systems.
The report highlights why protection must go beyond individual physical security. It must be a comprehensive, collective process that includes legal, psychosocial, spiritual, digital, and community-based support.
✊🏽 Defending rights is also an act of collective organising. Protecting those who defend the Amazon is essential to safeguarding its territories, biodiversity, and peoples.

What does it take to cure the wounds colonialism left behind, so Indigenous educators can teach from a place of healing?
#AmazonFrontlines and @AlianzaCeibo invited more than 20 future educators on a journey of healing and learning, part of the Community-Led Education Program, recovering ancestral memory to preserve cultural identity for future generations.
Their journals offer a window into healing through ancestral memory and plant medicine, confronting wounds left by colonialism, extractivism, and conventional education, and reclaiming the knowledge needed to teach future generations in the northern Ecuadorean Amazon.
At the Centro Takiwasi , master plants were used in therapeutic processes and ceremonies as participants worked through these struggles.
This journey is part of a bigger effort to reclaim Indigenous education. Just last week, after six years of work, the Ecuadorian government officially recognized autonomous, community-led Indigenous educational systems and curricula — a historic step toward Indigenous peoples’ right to shape education in their own territories.

“The risk is that there are now three Trump-aligned presidents in the upper Amazon and Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, is flying around trying to cut reckless deals which are essentially about the wholesale extraction of minerals from the largest rainforest on earth, home to millions of Indigenous peoples, a cradle of biodiversity, and one of the last hopes for stemming the climate crisis,” Mitch Anderson, executive director of #AmazonFrontlines.

Schoolchildren from Yonkers New York connected with Indigenous students from the A'i Cofán nation in the Ecuadorian Amazon to foster new relationships, learn about Indigenous knowledge, and nurture a collective responsibility to take care of our planet. They made a short educational film to share their experience and help inspire positive change in the world.
This project was brought to life by Liz Bonnin as part of the National Geographic Society as part of the Explorer-Educator Exchange programme, alongside #AmazonFrontlines and #AlianzaCeibo. Storytellers, educators, Indigenous communities and NGOs came together to tell the story of what's possible when we connect and collaborate across borders and cultures for the benefit of people and nature.
