It's crazy how bad @CentralPark_NYC is getting recently. 6 armed robberies, a near fatal bike crash, assaults. And now a murder in what a week, 10 days?
Officers from the NYPD Central Park Precinct received a 911 call at approximately 9:43 a.m. after a person was found unresponsive inside a wooden gazebo near the Boathouse at East 74th Street and East Drive.
Upon arrival, officers found a woman believed to be in her 60s unconscious and unresponsive with what appeared to be serious head injuries. EMS pronounced her dead at the scene. The victim has not yet been identified.
Sources familiar with the investigation said the woman suffered multiple stab wounds and may have been homeless and living in the area.
The crime scene was located off the beaten path and obscured by trees. A large tent and articles of clothing could be seen strewn in and around the wooden structure.

Here we go again @CentralPark_NYC . The last time we had a Global Citizen with significant rain, the lawn was closed until April. It's bad enough that they steal 10 days with closure and endless hassles, but another 6 weeks before the winter closure is a predictable shame.
A worrying situation is unfolding as a Nor'easter storm is expected to hit the city around 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The Global Citizen Concert begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Great Lawn. More than 50K people are expected at the concert.
In 2023, the Great Lawn was badly damaged when Global Citizen coincided with Tropical Storm Ophelia, causing more than $600K in damage and closing the lawn to the public 2 months earlier than usual.
There is no rain date.

- A DMV-issued Learner's Permit should be required, under 18, plus a class on safety. Age alone should not be the only qualifier.
- Strict age-verification regimen.
- Treat under 18 as "probationary" period, with membership revoked w dangerous riding.
- Visible front +back plates to report bad behavior of minors and adults.

What NYC bike advocates have fought AGAINST: Helmet mandates, ticketing of red-light running cyclists, licensing and registration of ebikes, requirements of cyclists to stay in open/usable bike lanes instead of traffic, and overall enforcement of people on two wheels.
Let's face it, these guys are made for each other. ❤️ Birds of a feather...
No mention that "passenger" was in the basket of the @CitiBikeNYC , and then the quote from @TransAlt , which accepts generous funding from @lyft /@CitiBikeNYC and insists on more infrastructure for Citibike. No wonder this keeps happening. We need honest reporting of facts.

We need kids educated on the risks and rules of the road. Age verification. A learner's permit. A probation period. Helmets. No doubling up. I say this generally, not just to this incident. And yes, ultimately the truck driver must be assumed responsible, but as a parent, I would not want any of my kids chancing it. My heart goes out to the families. The loss is unimaginable. The @lyft policy, endorsed by @TransAlt and @NYCCouncil to get as many kids on e-bikes as possible, comes at too great a cost.
It is indeed heartbreaking, and incredibly sad. There was a bike lane a block away. And a bike lane on First Ave. The infrastructure is there. 14th St was converted to a bus way to speed bus commutes and increase speed. It's not appropriate for e-bikes, especially doubled up. I feel for these families, it is so tragic. Perhaps we should examine best practices for young riders. One per bike. Age verification. Education on traffic laws before enjoying this "freedom". This death should never have happened. The "add bikers at all costs" has the severest of repercussions. We must all do better. @NYCCouncil must do better. @CitiBikeNYC must do better, and @TransAlt that accepts significant funding fr @CitiBikeNYC @lyft must do better. Lives that we all cherish are at stake.

.@lyft is doing nothing to keep children from driving and taking their own underaged passengers on these dangerous motorized vehicles. By definition, two children in charge of one motorized vehicle built for one adult to drive is dangerous. We are sacrificing lives to ideology here. RIP. Attractive nuisance.

How could cellphones possibly be so valuable to those robbers?
• Locked or blacklisted devices can be shipped overseas where carrier blacklists are not enforced, or stripped down immediately for high-value replacement components.
• If the phone had not been locked, thieves gain access to banking apps, payment wallets and MFA codes, allowing for identity theft or direct financial theft.
• Phones are compact and easy to conceal, and can be snatched quickly on bicycles or scooters with relatively minimal effort.

Gun-toting thugs terrorized Central Park late Thursday — robbing six people at gunpoint across four separate incidents, police said.
The alarming muggings unfolded over about an hour along East Drive, with the suspects targeting unsuspecting parkgoers for their cellphones.
Cops have not yet confirmed if all of the robberies were committed by the same group, police were still investigating the crimes Friday.
