Iranian Mil Engineering That Circumvents Sanctions The most important development in the Middle East today is not merely the erosion of the American encirclement model. It is the rise of an Iranian logistical engineering capability that once seemed unthinkable. This includes networks of buried missile factories that refine and mix their own fuel using a system of inclined-tower refining never seen before. The entire network is fed by road arteries that branch inside mountains, gas stations, markets, and fake parking lots, all designed to move inputs to these facilities without drawing the attention of satellites. This machine continued operating even after the major rocket-fuel producers were bombed. This mastery now extends to Yemen. There, no one mixes liquid fuel on site, because such facilities would be easier to detect and strike. Instead, Yemen essentially receives ready-made liquid fuel from Iran through a high-risk smuggling network that uses refrigerated tanks. Solid fuel, by contrast, is manufactured in Yemen under Iranian supervision. The entire process costs money, and Yemen pays for it, not to mention the missile components themselves. Where does the money come from? Ironically, part of it comes from the Saudis themselves. There are people inside the IRGC who profit from this, of course, but that is not the main point. What is striking is that Iran keeps refining its invisible logistics even under intense aerial, naval, and ground monitoring. The volume of ballistic and cruise missile launches, along with the drones in Houthi hands, is further evidence of this improved logistics. And the Iraqi PMF? Drones and other weapons not supplied by the Iraqi government regularly reach the hands of these militias. During the last war, aircraft and drones were struck over Iraq, clearly with Iranian weapons provided to the militias. This is a logistical network that continues to improve, and local governments struggle to dismantle it. Iran has become a conventional power with a respectable missile and drone force. At the same time, it remains a state of militia veins whose logistics keep advancing. The idea of economically asphyxiating a state like Iran simply spreads fires across the entire region. Zimbabue se expande con la ayuda de China. Avanza con rapidez la planta de hierro y acero de Manhize, un megaproyecto de 1.500 millones de dólares. Liderado por China, el proyecto ya ha completado su primera fase y se encuentra en una etapa de expansión y producción activa. La planta ya produce palancas de acero (steel billets), arrabio (pig iron) y barras corrugadas. Además, la obra civil continúa escalando con la construcción de una planta de cemento integrada programada para aprovechar los subproductos de la escoria del alto horno. La Fase 1 está diseñada para producir 600.000 toneladas de acero al año. Actualmente, hay planes de expansión respaldados por una inyección adicional de capital para duplicar la producción a 1,2 millones de toneladas anuales a corto plazo, con miras a alcanzar los 5 millones de toneladas métricas en sus fases finales. El complejo ya abastece la demanda local e inició exportaciones hacia mercados de la región de la SADC como Sudáfrica, Zambia, Malaui y Mozambique. Para sostener este flujo, se están desarrollando infraestructuras masivas que incluyen una línea ferroviaria dedicada hacia Mozambique. El proyecto posiciona a Zimbabue como un gigantesco actor siderúrgico regional. Técnicamente se convertirá en una de las acerías integradas más grandes de África, pero no en la mayor del continente de forma inmediata, aunque amenazará a Sudáfrica. Sudáfrica (con ArcelorMittal S.A.) retienen actualmente capacidades instaladas superiores (de entre 3 y 7 millones de toneladas anuales). No obstante, una vez que Manhize madure hacia sus fases finales proyectadas de 5 a 6 millones de toneladas, disputará directamente los primeros puestos del podio africano.

One of the Houthis’ tactics is ambushing convoys on mined routes, opening fire with machine guns and a rain of mortars to create panic and turn the columns into easier targets. This has significantly slowed the advance of Saudi-backed troops, who, even with substantial air support, are struggling to consolidate positions. Clashes continue nonetheless, with casualties on both sides. The attacks on Saudi infrastructure are obviously worrying their allies in Yemen and lowering troop morale. But did the Houthis really mine routes in the desert? Who was the crazy one? Rommel did it, and he used ambush tactics very similar to these. As I said earlier, any real pacification of the region depends on an understanding between Trump and the IRGC, which is unlikely. Everyone else is a secondary actor. The Saudis don’t have enough bombs or interceptors for a conflict lasting months. Even if they did, it wouldn’t change much. The chances of intercepting saturated waves of drones plus more than one type of missile are not high. But even if the Saudis decided to go all-in against the Houthis, mobilize their own army, add another 250,000 men to the front, and get drawn into a deeper war, what would Saudi Arabia actually gain? That equation doesn’t add up for me.

Eritrea is invading Ethiopia to create a buffer zone. Yes, Eritrea has launched a military incursion into Ethiopia. Local residents confirmed that uniformed Eritrean soldiers, equipped with heavy weapons, crossed the border and pushed deep into Tigray, moving through major towns such as Adigrat. Witnesses told the BBC and Al Jazeera they saw dozens of uniformed Eritrean troops advancing along strategic roads in Tigray, positioning themselves exactly in the areas where the Ethiopian army has been fighting the new coalition of armed rebels. The Ethiopian army has already responded, striking Eritrean military convoys with drones. Experts from the international conflict-monitoring project ACLED confirmed that Ethiopia’s federal army carried out drone strikes against vehicles carrying Eritrean soldiers in the locality of Guada, after they crossed the border through Zelambessa heading south. Residents of Edaga Hamus also reported witnessing these airstrikes against the Eritrean troops. In a separate line of action, weapons and ammunition seizures are one of the central pillars of Ethiopia’s accusations against Eritrea. Ethiopia’s federal police publicly confirmed the interception of thousands of rounds of ammunition and weapons shipments allegedly sent clandestinely by the Eritrean government, according to reports from Ethiopian authorities. The trend is for the fighting to intensify, and for the two countries to be at war within weeks. Eritrea knows Ethiopian troops are performing well against the rebel alliance. It has ordered Tigrayan forces to pull back into more protected areas while mobilizing its own army to support the rebels. Eritrea is convinced that a victory over the rebels would put Ethiopia on the path to an invasion aimed at securing its own access to the sea.
