4 DETAILS you NEED to know for the Guardians vs Rays ALCS Game 2 tonight: 1. Freddy Peralta's complete turnaround... No pitcher has had improved more in the 2nd half of the season than Peralta. His season ERA sits at 4.42 with a 1.33 WHIP, but over his last 3 starts, he's recorded an elite 1.15 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, .200 AVG, with a 4.5% barrel rate. Since being traded to Tampa, Peralta's splits have gotten drastically better. He's also allowed just 3 runs across 6 straight games to end the season, and recorded a 4.2 inning postseason start against the Yankees where he allowed just 3 hits and 1 ER. 2. The issue is, this Guardians offense has been on fire, Peralta's season splits are significantly worse against left-handed batters (take this with a grain of salt, as he's been much better lately), but what really sticks out are the command issues. 56% first pitch strike rate and a 9% BB rate against lefties on the season. This Guardians offense projects 8/9 bats from the left side (Jo Adell being the only RHH), and they've crushed RHPs in the postseason. 2 ER against both Rasmussen and Sean Burke, with 3 combined HRs across both of those games. There's definitely some K upside there though. Rasmussen posted 7 Ks and Burke had 4 Ks prior to that. Grant Taylor also had 6 Ks across 4 innings in his first appearance against that lineup last series. As hot as that offense is, I like Freddy to handle business in his first time seeing this Cleveland offense this season. 3. Parker Messick has had some real issues in the postseason. In his 2 postseason starts against the White Sox last series, he allowed 4 runs and 6 BBs across 7 innings. He was still limiting overall contact and his K stuff looked great, but there could be several different issues contributing to his control problems. ( Likely usage fatigue with a 186 innings of work this season, but could also be nerves) 4. Luckily for Messick, and contrary to what many people may realize, this Rays offense offers a way better matchup. This Rays lineup drops from a top 5 offense vs RHPs to a bottom 5 offense when facing left-handed pitching. The positive is that they've looked solid against lefties in the postseason, finding no issues against Foster Griffin or Max Fried. The 4 ER off Fried holds a lot more weight, but one of those HRs was a "unicorn" at Yankee Stadium. Messick's got some elite splits against right-handed hitters, and the Rays rank 28th in run value against the fastball this season If Messick can find a good performance, which we know he's more than capable of, the Rays may find themselves in some trouble. Though they are also one of the best home offenses in baseball this season.
