The first episode in the new season of “Worst Ex Ever” on @netflix features the story of Wade Wilson, a Florida man who killed two women in 2019. The episode reflects very poorly on @PBCountySheriff and includes footage from an investigator questioning Wilson.

Hats off to @WIRED for this candid journalistic self-examination. The last two paragraphs are a gut punch. RIP Joe Rago, whom I interviewed during the reporting and writing of Bad Blood. apple.news/AwgktUs6RRP2bV0Nj…

And it is just great marketing and public relations to refer to your work in an industry that struggles to connect with people as “boring.” That really drives subscriptions! Almost seven years?! Well gosh, that sure is a whole lot, ma’am. You have seen a lot. Lol.
The comments from high horse reporters on this are ridiculous. I’ve worked in local news for all of my 20s, almost 7 years. I feel comfortable saying it is often boring AF — but never less important. The challenge is to explain the boring stuff/make it connect! That’s the juice!

Yes because the venture is so profitable and sustainable! Great advice that is applicable both to young aspiring journalists and to billionaires! And coming from someone who has owned a newspaper it means a lot. Bless your heart.
Awful lot of quote tweets from people who have never owned a newspaper and will never be entrepreneurial. I hope I see more people buying their local newspapers!!

Maybe this 25-year-old man doesn’t need some weirdo white knighting and protecting his virtue. Local journalism isn’t boring. And it is a red flag to make that statement. Also funny how much credit you want to give him for “saving” something he just took over.
Maybe don’t dunk on a 25-year-old kid who just saved his hometown newspaper and has already grown its readership by posting article summaries on TikTok. This guy knows more about how to make interesting local journalism than you. We need more Evan Newtons. 🫡

Good thing there doesn’t have to be a choice! Both will continue to decline from here.
Speaking as someone who was caught by the Washington Post’s layoffs and does not work for the Washington Sun, I much prefer a situation where our city sustains multiple news outlets to one in which we pit them against each another.

The film does not reflect a great script.
Amazing story behind the story. This kind of synchronicity is *extremely* rare ... but when you write a great script, it can happen.

Translation: Would-be students are no longer willing to pay Columbia J-school $90K for a 9 month MA program The school accelerated the decline by over-enrolling Chinese students who couldn't speak English but could pay full tuition, leading quality faculty to bolt.
NEW: The Columbia Journalism School is pausing admissions for its Master of Arts degree amid a “critical evaluation” of the M.A. curriculum, Dean Jelani Cobb announced in a Thursday afternoon email to alumni.

I'd be curious to learn whether Columbia J-school will be critically evaluating the tuition.

The brand is cooked. Nobody gives a shit. Have Jelani journal about it in The New Yorker.
💻 For the first time in @Columbia Journalism School’s history, we’re launching an online Master of Science in Journalism, offered part-time over two years!

They are getting paid poorly is the answer relative to being overworked as well as looming job cuts around them every day. It’s why professional antagonists who say “The Media” for everything are kayfabing people for conflict engagement. Some DC political reporter making nice bank with a cable appearance deal or a CNN host swanning the DC party circuit is not remotely living the same life as a sports or news reporter in a small U.S. city who is grinding just to pay rent. The latter is usually just trying to stay afloat and the motivation is often wanting to do good work for a community.
Very interesting to see the pay scale for a sports reporter at a major publication based on New York. Makes me wonder what smaller city newspaper sports reporters are getting ?

Raise your hand if you want to subscribe to a newspaper with AI generated content instead of following real journalists who actually uncover real news and tell stories by physically interviewing people, reviewing documents and gaining the trust of whistleblowers to get to the truth.
A week after McClatchy laid off journalists nationwide, the newspaper chain announced their replacements: Editors for a new “innovation lab” focused on AI-generated lifestyle articles. “Celebrating Our Team,” execs wrote in an email about the hires. san.com/cc/inside-a-newspape…

Last week, exactly 10 days before my 5-year anniversary at The Charlotte Observer, my position was eliminated by McClatchy along with 7 of my colleagues. And it happened less than 48 hours after being told corporate had given the green light to bring back my podcast they whacked two years earlier. This means the paper of record that has covered the franchise since its inception in 1987 will no longer have a writer dedicated to giving readers the latest daily insight on the team. Training camp starts in two weeks. During my career in this industry, which has spanned more than 25 years, I've had my share of tough assignments. Following in the footsteps of a legend and someone whose name is permanently affixed to two areas in Spectrum Center ranks right up there. I'm grateful, thankful and forever humbled that I was the one chosen to take on the huge responsibility. And I'm proud of the content I produced. Every single bit of it, including a recent string of nothing but exclusives. Thanks to all those who consumed my work and musings about the #Hornets. It's deeply appreciated. Cheers to what's next.
