The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.

The story of Van Halen's beginnings.
Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen started out playing at high school parties, in backyards, and at small venues under various names, such as Broken Combs, Trojan Rubber Company, and Mammoth. Eddie sang and played guitar at the same time, but he didn’t like being the lead singer.
In 1974, they were joined by David Lee Roth, a charismatic singer who rented them sound equipment, and Michael Anthony on bass, completing the classic lineup. They changed the name to Van Halen, using the brothers’ surname, which sounded powerful and unique.
For several years, they played tirelessly on the Los Angeles club circuit at venues like the Starwood Gazzarris and the Whisky a Go Go, performing covers and developing an energetic, festive show. They were known for their high volume and Eddie’s incredible guitar technique.
In 1976, Gene Simmons of Kiss saw them play, was impressed, and financed a demo, though he was unable to sign them. Shortly after, Warner Bros. executive Mo Ostin and producer Ted Templeman saw them at Starwood and signed them immediately.
In 1978, they released their debut album, Van Halen, recorded in just a few weeks. It was an explosive hit that sold millions and included anthems like “Runnin’ with the Devil,” “Eruption,” “You Really Got Me,” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.”
The album revolutionized hard rock and turned Van Halen into superstars almost overnight.
