in the increasingly claustrophobic sphere of long-form prose, it can seem like people might only be boosting writing bc they’re friends, or to “network.” So let me say Idk his guy, nor do I want something from him. I just think he’s one of the great living American writers
Spent a few weeks earlier this year roaming a Hollywood almost entirely reoriented around the production of “microdramas,” which are kind of like soap operas except they’re short and completely demented and optimized for your phone. Started as one kind of sad story and ended as another, differently sad kind of story. You can read it now in @NYTmag nytimes.com/2026/10/06/magaz…

For this week's @NewYorker I wrote about illness in literature, specifically the difficulties of rendering bodily experience on the page

this is as good as everyone has been saying. incredibly funny, equally depressing and distressing, written with the charisma of a great writer. couldn't ask for much more thebaffler.com/salvos/paid-p…

A year ago we secretly eloped before the wedding with @gracecamille_ as our witness, and afterwards we went to Balthazar where we took a couples quiz from a book we bought in the City Hall gift shop, where one of the questions asked what books we were reading and my answer was "Horse Crazy" by Gary Indiana, and Grace asked if it was a picture book, so I complimented her then blonde hair and told her the women in my family all have blonde hair like hers, only natural. And anyway it was the perfect day
Wrote about mourning, memory and the things artists leave behind when they die. For Oldster Magazine, edited by the brilliant Sari Botton.

Last Wednesday, Ottessa Moshfegh’s Plimpton Prize–winning story “Bettering Myself” found itself at the center of a lawsuit filed against a Florida college by one of its faculty members. Vinita Prabhakar, the English professor in question, is suing for wrongful termination after being fired for teaching the story, alongside works by Hemingway and Carver, in a unit on unlikable narrators. This week, we’ve unlocked “Bettering Myself,” published in issue no. 204 of the Review, from the archive. theparisreview.org/fiction/6…

I was out to dinner last night with a bunch of translators in Athens, many languages represented, and the conversation was almost entirely shit talk about shoddy translations.
no, I was commenting on the tradition of collegiality when disagreeing about something so subjective & esoteric as adaptations of films & translations.
there is a long tradition of translators building upon pre-existing translations. the relatively small world of mostly academic / literary translators is not usually one in which people speak so harshly; as with philosophers the stakes are not only low but entirely subjective. there are no "objective" opinions. insulting & name-calling are commonplace in politics today but frankly surprising in other quarters. that was my (personal, subjective) response which I do not consider weird in the slightest & I stand by it.

gente ela esmagou KKKKKKK
Alguns destaques do texto dela:
“A escrita é péssima.

“But the representation of Odysseus as a reluctant warlord makes a nonsense of the movie’s imagined world. We are not shown that war or killing are bad, only that good men sometimes feel bad about it—a very different point.”
