Oesophagectomy in the East versus the West: comparison of two national audit databases
➡️ doi.org/10.1093/bjs/znaf035
The incidence of postoperative complications after oesophagectomy was nearly comparable between the Japanese and Dutch cohorts
Some remarkable differences were observed between cohorts regarding baseline characteristics, such as age, BMI, and histology, as well as the approach used for an intrathoracic anastomosis
These differences have to be taken into account when interpreting clinical studies from either Eastern or Western countries

La cirugía mínimamente invasiva se justifica demostrando que el impacto sobre la respuesta inflamatoria sistémica es menor, la factibildad mayor y los resultados clínicos mejores.

Inflammatory response and short-term outcomes after laparoscopic versus robotic transabdominal preperitoneal inguinal hernia repair: randomized clinical trial (ROLAIS)
➡️ doi.org/10.1093/bjs/znaf074
This RCT compared robotic-assisted transabdominal preperitoneal (R-TAPP) and conventional laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (L-TAPP) inguinal hernia repair, demonstrating that R-TAPP was associated with reductions in surgical stress, complications, operating time, and hospital stay
These findings underscore the potential advantages of robotic surgery and its role in improving short-term outcomes in inguinal hernia repair

Chest wall perforator flaps are safe and can decrease mastectomy rates in breast cancer surgery: multicentre cohort study
➡️ doi.org/10.1093/bjs/znae266
In this multinational collaborative study, comprising 603 women with breast cancer from Sweden, the UK, and Australia, it is shown that chest wall perforator flaps are effective with regards to avoiding mastectomy in women without any other technical alternatives
The procedure was undertaken as day surgery in 69% of patients, with a perioperative morbidity of 3.3%.
Conversion to mastectomy was as low as 1.5% and short-term follow-up was reassuring in terms of local control, risk of distant metastasis, and breast cancer-specific survival
