AI epistemic risks has got to be one of the most interesting areas at the moment, and it highlights why epistemic *resilience* is so important. The paper of the year on this (and quite possibly the most important paper ever on this issue) highlights that these risks are "self-concealing", because it is hard to know how our thinking has changed retroactively. Which is why it is so important to measure, track, and actively influence epistemic effects. It also sorts these issues into three categories: First, AI can persuade and manipulate. It can be misused for economic or political manipulation, inciting crime or radicalization, and escalating conflict. It can also create unintentional harms, e.g. sycophancy and mental health risks. Second, AI's unique features enable cognitive offloading in a qualitatively different way from previous technologies, risking cognitive decline. Third, human-AI and AI-AI feedback loops can narrow the epistemic space which humans and AI systems draw from. This already drives homogenization and may potentially lead to fragmentation. The 30+ authors record the emerging empirical evidence for each mechanism and analyse how they likely amplify one another, creating compounding systemic risk. Here is one for you @HelenhowsonBC I’ve been the staff member trying to figure out why a pt is not on the list . I remember maybe @amcunningham sharing a similar story on X of a ‘Not an appointment letter’? Untrusted assessment, over checking, #sillyrule = mega-failure demand
Likely a #sillyrule - to determine your urgency your notes are needed, but can’t be released without an appointment. Creating one automatically prints a letter which is normally destroyed . Some are accidentally sent and pt’s turn up & frontline staff don’t have them on the list.

Thank you to the many thousands of people across the whole of the NHS & social care who helped deliver the care during the pandemic. Has been a strange and difficult day. But felt it was important to give witness to some small part of the enormity of the challenge we all faced.
Prof @Kevin_Fong (Former National Clinical Adviser in Emergency Preparedness Resilience and Response) is giving evidence to the Inquiry today. 📺 You can view it on the live stream (and via playback) through our YouTube channel now 👇👇 youtube.com/@UKCovid-19Inqui…

And here he breaks down while explaining the absolute trauma experienced by smaller hospitals in particular - the "healthier" ICU patients were transferred out, leaving them coping with so much death. They felt so alone.
