Jillian Segal AO highlights an urgent threat to our democracy: the rising tide of antisemitism. After meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, I was left in no doubt about the level of concern in the Israeli government, and the Foreign Minister in particular, about the anti-Semitic abuse and harassment the Australian community has been enduring.

In an article in today’s Herald-Sun, Nova Peris, the first Aboriginal Australian to win an Olympic Gold medal, condemns Hamas for the brutal attack on 7 October and its determination to “eradicate Israel”. Reflecting that the Jewish community “has always supported Aboriginal people”, Nova says she understands both the Jewish/Israelite connection to land over millennia and the Palestinian connection over generations, but describes the wearing of a lapel pin with both the Aboriginal and Palestinian flags in Australia as “cultural misappropriation of us First Nations People”. Vale Bill Hayden with whom I enjoyed many years of friendship. He was also a good friend of Israel and the Jewish community. As president of the Zionist Federation of Australia it was my privilege to work closely with then Foreign Minister Bill Hayden in 1986 to advance through the Federal Parliament a unanimous resolution calling for the rescission of United Nations Resolution 3379 of 10 November 1975 equating Zionism with racism. That resolution was subsequently rescinded by the UN in 1991. But Australia, thanks primarily to the efforts of Bill Hayden, was the first country to pass a parliamentary resolution calling for the rescission of this infamous UN resolution. The Australian resolution was passed just two weeks prior to the historic state visit to Australia of the late President Chaim Herzog in October 1986. In the following year, 1987, an identical resolution was passed by the US Congress. It was sponsored by Daniel Patrick Moynihan and he called it ‘The Australian Resolution’.
Bill’s positive contributions to Australia in so many spheres were immense.
My thoughts are with Dallas and his family

Having worked alongside Indigenous colleagues to explore if and how Australia should recognise its First Peoples in the Constitution, I have a pretty clear picture of what we’ll be voting on in the referendum. I’ve put together a short video explaining why I look forward to voting YES, and encourage other Australians to do the same. youtu.be/k0r-xSB60fs
