#ADHD feels like a contradiction. We have severe difficulty focusing on some (boring) things but can also obsessively focus on some (interesting) things. This apparent dichotomy stems from the same issue: we have difficulty controlling our attention.

I'm imagining a NT parent hearing their ADHD child saying that eating is too much effort. You know they're gonna call the child lazy. But that doesnt make any damn sense. Sure if it was once or twice. But regularly struggling to eat? How can laziness possibly make sense?

ADHDers struggle to keep their minds alert in between tasks.. what I call the 'standby mode'. It's like your phone locking when not used for some time. You're not actively using it but it still get alerts when something happens. ADHD phones just turns off due to inactivity.

I wish everyone understood their "ADHD moments" are ours 24/7 365. Our ND faucet never turns off, medication can help but it won't make us NT.

We ADHDers are often underestimated. I mentioned this to my friend in conversation and I really liked his interpretation. And it's true. It doesn't matter how competent you are for big stuff, people underestimate us because of the small stuff, which we struggle with.

Mental health issues/ disorders are often genetic. You'd think a parent who experienced the same issues as you would be helpful, but if they didn't get any support, they might invalidate your struggles more ("everyone has those issues!"). Its a shitty circle of invalidation.

Hormones have a HUGE impact on ADHD symptoms. This means our relationship to ADHD often changes when our hormones do, such during pregnancy, HRT, normal monthly cycles, and menopause. For those who've experienced it, how has your ADHD changed during and after menopause?

ADHD is an executive function disorder. So we struggle with setting goals, planning it out, with sequences and such. One of the things that ADHDers struggle with is following instructions. As such, when given instructions I tend to follow the most direct interpretation.

The 'worst' part about trying is that you have to deal with things constantly. People, feelings, thoughts, all the time. When I didnt try, I was stagnating and felt worse but I could just stop. Trying is infinitely better but fuck, life never stops.

i've mentioned this before but one of the hardest things about adhd is how it can WRECK your relationships because you don't have friendship degradation mechanics like everyone else

If you're a woman in your 30s-50s & your ADHD suddenly gets REALLY bad (not just cyclically so), know that peri/menopause can make ADHD much worse *&* meds less effective. You *may* need hormone therapy &/or increased med dosage--or at least extra awareness/coping techniques! 🚨
If you find yourself struggling or failing more often, it doesn't necessarily mean your symptoms are getting worse. Maybe you're doing more thing, meaning more chances to fail. Like how an adult has more responsibilities than a teen, making it harder to cope with everything.

I really enjoyed this episode @ABCsofADHD! "Why are ADHDers only consistently inconsistent? Can I become more consistent?" Particularly good is the comparison of why NTs can have an off day and still get stuff done, but if you are #ADHD you can't. open.spotify.com/episode/1IK…

Have someone without #ADHD ever dismissed your executive dysfunction with "Everyone has trouble getting motivated sometimes!"? Our language is ill-equipped to convey the complexity of our condition and @ABCsofADHD has tips on closing the understanding gap weareadhd.com/index.php/2021…
