Then the second erasure: there is still no MENA category on the census. We get counted as "White," which hides real disparities in health, education, and hate crime victimization. Removing the race questions kills any near-term shot at fixing that.

For MENA communities in California, this is a double erasure. Our communities were built in large part by refugees and asylum seekers from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Sudan. Many hold temporary status. This proposal writes them out of the count entirely.

The 14th Amendment is not ambiguous. Representation is based on the "whole number of persons in each state." Not citizens. Persons. Every census since 1790 has counted everyone living here. This breaks 235 years of precedent.
