The Department for Transport has confirmed the A38 Derby Junctions scheme faces potential cancellation, as the Government consults on reallocating roads funding toward national defence. π§΅
We are expecting a decision on the future of the A38 scheme within the next few weeks.
In the meantime, we are amplifying the widespread local opposition and the overwhelming case for cancellation.
On the eve of The Autumn Budget, local residents have held signs at locations across Derby, each showing a reason why they want the A38 Derby Junctions scheme cancelled.
π§΅
The economic case for a wider A38 is collapsing.
Meanwhile, our case for cancelling a scheme which costs far more than it delivers has never been stronger.

We don't need bigger roads; we need transport infrastructure that works for people and planet.
The alternatives to road expansion are available and pretty obvious. We included the suggestions of more than 200 supporters in our response to the DfT consultation.

Last week, we submitted our formal response to the Departmemt of Transport consultation on cancelling the A38 & A46 schemes.
Weβre publishing the full response because the evidence should speak for itself.
The schemeβs own evidence shows a project that risks making congestion worse, destroying a wildlife site and centuries-old trees, increasing carbon emissions, and locking Derby into car dependency.
Weβve also submitted an independent transport consultantβs report exploring what a genuine alternative to the A38 could look like and cost.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign and helped get us here.

This is brilliant news, and the perfect example of sustainable economic growth. Now please cancel the Β£600m @A38Expansion and fund electrification of Midland Mainline instead, to give a further boost to the East Midlands.

Pressure is building on Mayor Claire Ward and other representatives to put people and planet before short-term profit.

The economic case for expansion has collapsed. The environmental case never existed. We are already experiencing the horrific impacts of fossil fuel expansion and ecological loss, with the situation set to worsen in the coming years.
By backing the A38 scheme, Mayor Ward and others in power are living in a world that no longer exists.
It's beyond time to begin building a visionary, sustainable Derby.

βοΈ The benefit-cost ratio has fallen from 2.6 to 1.0 while costs have tripled to Β£646m+. This is an outdated scheme that will throw away a huge amount of money better spent on sustainable alternatives and supporting the people of Derby through a chronic cost-of-greed crisis.
