" Veteran players aren't willing to right a broken ship because it may mean sacrificing their characters. They rather the game actually die than restart."
Bingo. Onward to rs4.
I keep being asked what my thoughts on Runescape 3 Reignited are. Here they are:
- Announcement was bad and confusing. What this is wasn't made clear.
- Logo is terrible. Advertised to look like every other Runescape/OSRS limited time gamemode, when it distinctly isn't.
- A half-measure to solve the issue of a dwindling/stagnated playerbase.
But...
- These kinds of decisions aren't made lightly. The game is clearly on the ropes. Another year of general updates will struggle to drive new player interest.
- A lack of new player interest CLEARLY stems from a terrible reputation - something that Jagex may not have the time or budget to fully fix as they had to sacrifice a large portion of their revenue by removing the predatory MTX. The game is on a timer.
- One way to mend a reputation *tainted* by predatory MTX is to restart the game; fresh slate/tabula rasa. This may give SOME percieved value back to longterm achievements like skill capes, max capes, etc. and therefore motivate new players to actually invest time into it.
- This is a PSYCHOLOGY issue. New players who are aware of this game are obviously disinterested due to its past. You cannot erase the past. And unlike in themepark MMOs, you don't have yearly resets allowing for new player onboarding.
- Veteran players aren't willing to right a broken ship because it may mean sacrificing their characters. They rather the game actually die than restart.
So...
- I dislike the half-measure solution. If OSRS was dying & Jagex made a candid, frank blogpost saying that their only percieved way forward is for a full server reset, then I would sacrifice my 8,000+ hour maxed character in a heartbeat. Wouldn't think twice.
- I love Runescape, not my character. I can make a million versions of them. But there is only one Runescape.
- The ideal should've been an honest discussion with the community, not a surprise, confusing reveal.
After reading the comments on reddit and twitter for the last couple of days, it's become VERY clear that there is only one way forward for Jagex concerning the future of RS3:
just bin the whole game, its time to ride the rs4 hype train BAYBEE 🔥🔥🔥

My hot take? Dragonwilds was an elaborate tech demo/proof of concept so they could see how a wider audience reacted to the Runesacpe IP before announcing Runescape 4, and so they could publicly develop the game engine and assets for years without people asking what they were up to.
That explains their focus on forcing as much of the runescape play cycle into a survival game (despite the fact that it felt rather forced at times) instead of creating what I thought would be a 'survival game with some of the trappings of the runescape IP.'
Been saying this for years: bring on Runescape 4.
not me calling the runescape 4 realease in the infamous dragonwilds video over a year and a half ago youtu.be/ju7YDVrqWXc?t=522

Absolutely lovely guys, and trailblazers in the content space. They built the foundations for what a lot of modern MMO content is. Wonderful to hang out with them.

92 is halfway to 99. This applies to almost everything in life.
Should really have an official name for this like the Jagex principle or something.
