Monument to those shot in the Civil War in Campo da Rata, A Coruña. The site just outside the Galician city was used to kill hundreds of leftists between 1936-37. Inaugurated in 2001. Poem by Garcia Lorca is carved into the granite, stained in places in red📷Chencho Mendoza Instg

Seems @Alexarmstrong posted this at 1am to avoid anyone seeing it. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen. Hold @GBNEWS to account.
On 19 July 2024, I published two posts on my X account in which I made allegations about Mr Mothin Ali being involved in the Harehills riots. I have accepted these were incorrect and I have jointly made a statement in open Court in order to apologise to Mr Ali and correct the record which is below. archive.org/details/JSIOC-MA…

Publicly owned Royal Mail delivered letters six days a week. After privatisation, bosses tripled their salaries and cut that to three days a week. Yes, it's our old friend 'the superior efficiency of the private sector'.

As Reform UK’s Sunderland Leader @CllrChrisEynon blocked us, he won’t see that we are reminding everyone that he used to campaign for Boris Johnson, for a Conservative government. He would really hate this, so whatever you do, don’t also share it.

Royal Mail has been told that it could save £650m by only delivering things 3 days a week. Did you know that the taxpayer could save £4,000m a year if Royal Mail had never been privatised, or if it was renationalised, and deliver 5 days a week. I'd go with that.

These photos were sent to me by the family of Bill Susman, American International Brigader, wounded at the Ebro. He brought this lovely figure back from Catalonia in 1938. It's called "El més petit de tots" (The smallest of them all ". It was created by the sculptor Miquel Paredes for the Comissariat de Propaganda of the Catalan government de la Generalitat de Catalunya in February 1937 as a symbol of the revolution and resistance of the Catalan people against fascism. There was also a children's book. There were Catalan Republican, Anarchist and Communist versions. This one has the three-point star of the International Brigades so it's in homage to that. They were usually painted so I guess this was unfinished when Bill acquired it, probably in Barcelona.

I am very sad to hear of the death of Ken Friar. He was a decent, honest and gracious man who dedicated his whole life to Arsenal. I will always enjoy the sight of the Ken Friar Bridge when I walk to the stadium. Ken, you will be greatly missed.

George Graham got married on 16 September 1967. His best man was Terry Venables, one of his closest friends in football. There was just one problem. Graham played for Arsenal. Venables played for Tottenham. And on the very day of the wedding, their teams were facing each other at Highbury. 😭😂 So, instead of spending the afternoon celebrating, the newlyweds’ wedding party had to wait. The groom and his best man had a North London derby to play first. “We got married in the morning.” “We left the reception, Terry and I, we both went to Highbury to play the game and then we went back to the reception in the evening.” Venables made it clear that friendship would have to take a back seat once they stepped onto the pitch. “There were no jollies after the wedding.” “I didn’t want to feel jolly anyway before playing against him.” Just hours after posing together for wedding photographs, the two friends were trying to kick lumps out of each other in front of 62,836 spectators. 😂 Graham went in hard on Venables. Venables gave it right back. But while the tackles were evenly matched, the football certainly wasn't. Arsenal ran riot, scoring four goals, with Graham getting on the scoresheet himself. As the goals kept flying in, Graham couldn't resist reminding his best man that he had a wedding reception to enjoy later. “It’s me who should be saving myself for tonight, not you!” Arsenal won 4-0. 🔴⚪️ And just like that, the battle was over. The two friends changed, left Highbury and headed back to the reception together. Imagine getting married, making your best man play against you in a North London derby, beating his team 4-0, and then going back to celebrate together. 😂😂 Graham's verdict on the day? “It was the best day of my life.” “Oh, and I got married too.” ❤️

Arsenal Life President Ken Friar OBE has sadly passed away, aged 92. Friar began working at Arsenal part-time as a 12-year-old & was the longest-serving director at the club until he stepped down in September 2020. A true Arsenal man. May he rest in peace. ❤️🕊️

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Life President Ken Friar OBE. Since our formation in 1886, there have been many inspirational individuals who have driven our club forward, but no one has had an influence on Arsenal Football Club quite like ‘Mr Friar’ and he leaves an extraordinary life of service to the club as his legacy. One that will surely never be matched. Rest in peace ❤️

Ken Friar is Arsenal. In 1946, a 12-year-old local boy kicked a ball under manager George Allison’s car outside Highbury. Allison was impressed by his enthusiasm and gave him a matchday messenger job. That kid started full-time in the box office in 1950 and never left. Without Ken Friar, Arsenal would not be the same today. He rose through the ranks to become club secretary, then managing director in 1983. For nearly two decades he ran the day-to-day club, negotiated contracts, protected Highbury’s character, and kept Arsenal’s values intact through changing times. When the club needed a new home, he stepped away from the MD role to drive the Emirates Stadium project with Danny Fiszman — delivering one of the most complex builds in football history on time and on budget. He described Arsene Wenger as like a younger brother and said he didn’t think they could have built the Emirates without the success and stability Wenger brought. In 2020, after more than 70 years, he stepped down from the board and was named life president. There’s a bridge named after him outside the Emirates and a statue of that boy chasing the ball. Ken Friar didn’t score the goals or lift the trophies. He was the constant — the living memory, the steady hand, and the quiet guardian of everything Arsenal is supposed to stand for. He spent 80 years of his life at Arsenal Football Club. From 1946 to today. Ken Friar, thank you.

A Little Owl (mochuelo in Spain, mussol in Catalan) kindly sent by Lucy Brzoska. It had flown down to inspect these items left by gardeners working in the Fossar de la Pedrera, Montjuïc , the mass grave of the victims of the Franco regime in Barcelona. Like a surrealist painting.
