the root of all evil is miscommunication. i swear, so many times have i seen an excellent couple have a wedge so wide driven between them just because they thought their partner meant something they never actually meant. it may sound so petty to acquire the tone sometimes advised in couples counselling, i.e. “i hear you; i acknowledge your feelings; i believe you meant this when you said that”, but more and more i find it to actually be somewhat smart and essential, at least in the first stages of any relationship. again, assume miscommunication before felony or misdemeanour. the odds are they never meant to hurt you.

i remember that like three seconds into the first episode of Dexter he looks at an empty box of donuts and goes "empty. just like me." and that kind of set the tone for what to expect for the rest of the show
