This is my current microphone setup. Røde VideoMic NTG with the gain knob set to 7 and -20 dB enabled. DJI Mic 2 transmitter with 32-bit float recording acts as a recorder (noise reduction disabled). Lume Cube light stand. Both the microphone and recorder have their own internal batteries, so the entire thing is self-contained, and I can even pick up the whole rig and use it as an improvised boom mic if I have to.
Even though the DJI Mic 2 is recording in 32-bit float, I think the Røde VideoMic NTG does its own internal processing, so the signal that comes out of it isn't analog. This causes distortion if I get too loud, even with a 32-bit recorder, which is why -20 dB is enabled. This produces a low enough noise floor that I can add around 20 dB of gain in post and have it sound decent without distortion. Then I use a free plug-in called ReaFIR to remove background hum, and then apply multiband compression to increase perceptual loudness so it sounds better on smartphone speakers.
I then normalize background music to around -16 dB and use EQ to lower the amplitude around 1000 kHz to -15 dB with moderate roll-off so the music doesn't occupy the same frequency space as my voice, enabling me to make the music louder without drowning myself out.
The Røde VideoMic NTG generally sells for around $240, the DJI Mic 2 typically comes as a bundle with a receiver and second transmitter but can be bought by itself for $60, and I don't think Lume Cube makes this specific light stand anymore, but it used to be $20 if I remember. Throw in a generic coiled 3.5mm TRS cable (because the non-coiled cable the microphone comes with is too short) and the entire setup is about $340.

Morning.
Let's take a break from depression. I don't remember who made this, but it deserves to be shared even more because it's amazing and hilarious.
