Chad Gable told @ChrisVanVliet the El Grande Americano idea was his and it was never meant to be a joke.
He was already working with the luchadors and wanted more than great matches…
“I thought of this idea of donning a mask and kind of using it to insult their culture. Get more personal with this… to make it special, we have to find a way to elevate it.”
Creative and Hunter helped shape it, but the genesis was his and it was never meant to be a comedy act..
“It was never supposed to be funny… mean-spirited to jab at these guys and insult an entire culture of wrestling to get some heat. I think it worked.”
The mask started as a heat grab. It ended up one of the biggest stories of the year.

Chad Gable on Insight with @ChrisVanVliet for the first time as Intercontinental Champion and talked why he never fought the Kurt Angle comparisons..
“They’re of the highest compliment to me, being compared to Kurt. Some of that is in my nature. The intensity, the in-ring style. We share a lot from the jump, not just from me emulating him, but because we come from the same background.
It would be disingenuous to force a different style just to be different than Kurt. Do what I do. There’s a lot worse people you could be compared to than Kurt Angle.”
Same guy who told Kurt “you’re a hero of mine” before their Raw match, after telling 13-year-old Kurt at Mall of America he was gonna wrestle him someday.
