🏛️ COLORADO IS PUSHING BACK Colorado adopted new election rules on October 9 requiring federal monitors to obtain authorization from the Secretary of State’s Office. Secretary of State Jena Griswold’s office is reviewing the DOJ request with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office. The central question: How far does federal oversight extend into elections administered by state and local officials? Should Colorado welcome the additional oversight—or insist that federal monitors stay out? youtube.com/live/ytopwjTkLnI… @jeffhunt Source: Axios Denver | Additional reporting: The Denver Gazette, Colorado Public Radio

⚖️ WHAT WILL FEDERAL MONITORS ACTUALLY DO? The DOJ says its observers will monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws, including voter accessibility and language assistance. According to the department: Monitors will observe and take notes. They will not interfere with voting. They will not speak with voters inside polling places. They will not carry firearms. Federal election monitoring isn’t new. The DOJ monitored 64 jurisdictions in 24 states during the 2022 midterms.

🗳️ WHY ADAMS COUNTY? Adams County is central to Colorado’s competitive 8th Congressional District race between Republican incumbent Gabe Evans and Democratic challenger Manny Rutinel. The DOJ says Adams County was selected partly because federal law requires Spanish-language voting assistance there. Adams County Clerk Josh Zygielbaum has questioned the administration’s motives, suggesting the monitors could intimidate voters.

🎙️ THE BIG QUESTION FOR VOTERS When a polling company can publish invented numbers that reach respected media organizations, what safeguards should be required before those numbers become headlines? And should news organizations disclose when previously reported polling turns out to be fabricated? 🗳️ WHY THIS MATTERS Political polls don’t just measure public opinion. They can influence news coverage, campaign fundraising, volunteer enthusiasm, and perceptions of political momentum. Michigan Senate candidate Mallory McMorrow said misleading Wedgewood polling contributed to declining donations and pressure on her campaign. The controversy raises questions about how polling organizations verify their data—and how journalists decide which surveys deserve coverage.

🚨 THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN. In October, Wedgewood Polls acknowledged that nearly all its published surveys were fabricated. Unlike the earlier incident, Wedgewood’s numbers had entered major polling databases and appeared in national news coverage. The polling analysis organization FiftyPlusOne uncovered irregularities in the underlying data. Several polling trackers subsequently removed Wedgewood’s surveys.

📊 THE FIRST WARNING SIGN In August, an organization called Median Strategies admitted fabricating polling results involving elections in California, Nevada, and Wisconsin. A fake Los Angeles mayoral poll was even promoted by Mayor Karen Bass before its legitimacy was questioned. The organization claimed it wanted to demonstrate how easily unverified polling could spread.

💉 WHAT SHOULD COLORADANS KNOW? The infected Jefferson County resident’s vaccination status has not been disclosed. Health officials say two doses of the MMR vaccine are approximately 97% effective at preventing measles. Anyone developing symptoms after possible exposure should contact a healthcare provider by phone before visiting a medical facility. youtube.com/live/IvPtnTkk-08 Source: The Denver Post | Additional reporting: Colorado Public Radio, Denver7, CDPHE

⚠️ WHY THE CONCERN? Measles is among the most contagious infectious diseases. The virus can remain airborne for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash. Health officials recommend monitoring for symptoms for 21 days following possible exposure.
