Nine children walked into Little Rock Central High. The woman who got them there had her house stoned, burned, shot at and bombed — and lost her business for it. Daisy Bates. She was the president of the Arkansas NAACP and she ran the entire operation: selecting the students, preparing them, driving them, taking the phone calls, standing between them and the press. Her home became the headquarters. Crosses were burned on the lawn. Rocks came through the windows with notes attached. A bomb was thrown at the house. She kept a gun and her husband kept watch at night for months. She and her husband also published a newspaper, the Arkansas State Press. White businesses pulled every advertisement. In 1959 it closed. She had built that paper over sixteen years. It was the thing she owned. She lost it because she would not stop organising. There is a state holiday in Arkansas now that carries her name. Her house is a national historic landmark. She has a statue in the United States Capitol as of 2024. She got the statues eventually. She never got the newspaper back.
