So… a mother carried her baby to term, dealing with grief every step of the way, the family probably racked up bills that will negatively impact them for years, went through childbirth, all so that the child could live through two excruciating hours… and that’s good, Lila?

Thread: Why Do Russians Go to Fight in Ukraine? It’s All About the $$$
1/ Why do Russians go to fight in Ukraine? Spoiler: it’s not about ideology or patriotism. It’s all about the money.
Let me explain.

Dear @joerogan, could you ask @realDonaldTrump when he'll appear on your podcast: if Mr. President is so confident in his influence over Putin, could he help #FreeAzovstalDefenders and all Ukrainians from Russian captivity right away? Time is of the essence.
Sincerely, Oleksandr

The child in the video is a 2-year-old Mykyta, a victim of russia’s attack on Ohmatdyt Children's Hospital. He is also the kid in the photo taken right after the attack.
Mykyta is suffering with Lyell syndrome (toxic epidermal necrolysis), a severe skin condition, and because of russian terrorism he and nearly 100 other children have been forced to relocate to another hospital for treatment.
Mykyta, an innocent child who has already endured so much, deserved none of this. He and his family were in the hospital when the russian rocket struck. Though injured, they survived, but tragically russia took the lives of 4 other children within seconds that day, injured eight more, and caused immeasurable trauma for hundreds of families.
Russians have taken the lives that had barely begun.

Today's missile attack at a children's hospital in Kyiv pretty much sums things up on all that verbal diarrhea around "negotiations," "peace missions," and Putin's "peace proposals."
This was one of the most barbaric and demonstratively deliberate gestures of Russia's war on Ukraine.
Russia & Vladimir Putin are not interested in any "peace," "the end of the conflict," or a "compromise."
They are interested in Ukraine's unconditional surrender enforced via unlimited civilian terror.
They are unable to defeat Ukraine on battlefields (provided that the West stays with Ukraine and keeps sending defense aid, which is very likely); they will seek to escalate their missile attacks from trying to strip Ukraine of electricity and heating to deliberate mass killings of civilians.
I am afraid that in the coming months we'll be seeing even more deliberate terror attacks like one from today.
Hospitals, shopping malls, large residential buildings, you name it.
I'll be more than happy to end up being wrong with this one.
I don't know what else needs to be a FINAL WAKE UP CALL to the Western decision-makers still having hope of going the easiest way with what Russia is doing.
No, there won't be a moment when Putin says that he's OK with your "territorial compromises on Ukraine" as a result of which he leaves Ukraine alone forever (and you can forget about this annoying headache and continue business as usual).
No, you can be vowing before Putin never to accept Ukraine as a NATO member on a daily basis live on TV, but this will not stop him - because it's just about nothing but keeping Ukraine vulnerable and defenseless to a Russian invasion and occupation.
No, Putin is not to be reasoned with or traded with because he is not the one looking for peace.
He gladly uses your chronic lack of leadership, procrastination, fears, over-compromise, and reluctance to assume responsibilities and make necessary historic decisions.

We live in a time increasingly resembling the second half of the 1930s. I couldn't live with myself with the knowledge I didn't do more to stop another Hitler. In light of the Republican wavering and in memory of Navalny I will give $100 towards FPV drones for Ukr for every RT.

!THREAD 1!
This is actually an interesting headway into the ways in which resistance to & mockery of Soviet occupation happened right under the nose of Soviet authorities & often very publicly with them being none the wiser.
Let's have a quick look:

NAFO in occupied Estonia, 1982.
Yes. Before there was an internet - or any brain-damaged cartoon dogs - there were activists subverting russian propaganda and helping push back russian imperialism with the same spirit of NAFO (and remarkably similar jokes).
Let me explain.
⏪ In the early 1980s, a third generation of occupied Estonians entered university. Their parents had been brutalised by soviet rule, but they had new energy, new confidence, and new ideas to overthrow the empire.
The students began to organise. Anti-occupation protests spread like never before.
It started through semi-official networks. One example was EÜE, which were construction summer camps for students organised by the youth wing of the communist party. Each group was sent to the countryside with an official task - like to build a barn - in order to learn “Soviet work ethics”.
But, while there unsupervised, the students instead bonded over how to defeat the occupation and found creative ways to relentlessly mock their occupiers. The camps turned into cells of resistance.
In 1981, one such camp called itself Persostrat. The name was typically soviet - an abbreviation of a clunky, pompous phrase. (And it sounded like “ass sphere” in Estonian.) The group spent the summer writing their own parody soviet songs.
The next summer, in 1982, a new camp formed out of most of the same members and was sent down to south Estonia. They called themselves Euromais with a plan to parody soviet corn growing campaigns.
After arriving, they came up with a better idea.
“Enough of this Soviet shit,” said their camp leader, Mati Laur. They decided instead to declare their camp as a NATO base. Specifically, a British NATO base, because the British had a key role in supporting Estonia during its war of independence and they knew that reference would annoy the occupiers even more.
They put up signs in English and organised a strict schedule that included afternoon tea and picnics. They imitated and exaggerated British culture, manners, and fashion while ridiculing the unsophisticated russian occupiers. They wrote and enthusiastically sung their own anthem about how NATO would free Estonia from the russians. It was sung to the tune of Yankee Doddle, an iconic tune among Estonian youth as it was the opening to Voice of America’s Estonian broadcasts, which usually got through before the soviet jammers could interrupt it.
Incredibly, this “NATO base” was near an actual soviet base, which we now know had nuclear warheads.
Yet, to the students, the location was Satterfield, an English-sounding name invented for their imagined secure utopia.
Satterfield became a pre-internet kind of meme, enduring for years to come through networks across Estonia. An invitation to Satterfield was code for resistance organising.
Members of this “British NATO base” later formed part of the core of the student resistance to soviet occupation. They had a leading role in campaigning to anull the nazi-soviet pact and helped get the Singing Revolution started.
A decade after establishing their mock base, they achieved their goal. Estonia and its Baltic neighbours were free and the soviet union was no more.
The members of that original group are now well respected men and women in free Estonia. One who helped write that song even became Ambassador to NATO (the real one).
Estonia is now NATO with real NATO bases - and where the British really are based.
“We’ve been waiting for you since 1949,” explained @EerikNKross, former director of Estonian intelligence, who shared the story with them.
Eerik is now also part of NAFO, doing his bit to deliver supplies to Ukraine as part of @69thSB. To him, Satterfield and NAFO are part of one story. And proof that mocking russia can indeed make a real difference.
The spirit of Satterfield lives on.
It is thanks to Eerik that this story has been documented. You can read it from him in more detail here: upnorth.eu/how-the-estonian-…

This is Latvia’s Freedom Monument.
After victory in their war of independence, the Latvian people donated in the 1920s for a monument to commemorate the centuries of struggle to be a free nation.
(It was to replace a boring statue of a russian tsar.)
The monument depicts the story of the Latvian people - from ancient conquest by Germanic crusaders to their own National Awakening under russian tsarist rule and to finally becoming an independent nation state under international law …along with the values that guided them along the way.
The woman atop holding three stars is affectionately known as Milda, which was the name of the model who posed for the sculpture. (A Lithuanian woman living in Latvia, as it happens.)
The monument opened in 1935, the final years before the nazi-soviet alliance would collude to crush the freedom that it represented.
I saw a recent tweet from a visitor to Latvia saying the three stars represent the three Baltic countries.
In fact, those stars represent the three historical regions of Latvia. I’m not gonna dunk on them with a screenshot as I do for vatniks because we love anyone who wants to come visit and explore here. It’s just a shame someone told them the false version of its story.
So I thought it’s worth exploring where that myth came from.
After the occupation of Latvia began, the soviets began discussing plans to destroy the monument - repeatedly - but each time were too scared of the public fury it would invoke. The occupiers instead forbid Latvians from gathering at the monument, but it survived as the only public independence monument in the Baltics - and remained a powerful symbol to occupied Latvians.
The russians, instead of destroying, did the other most russian thing. Lying.
Their propaganda reinvented a story for the monument that it was built in gratitude to stalin and that the woman was mother russia holding three stars to represent the three Baltic countries she/stalin had ‘saved’ (i.e. illegally annexed through the nazi-soviet pact).
Yes, they tried to turn a sacred monument to a people’s freedom into a glorification of russian chauvinism over those people.
It didn’t work though.
In 1987, Latvians defied the occupiers and descended on the monument to gather in memory of the victims of soviet mass deportations on the anniversary of a mass snatching.
They returned again that year on the anniversary of the nazi-soviet pact to demand it be repealed, which would end the occupation.
Soviet mass deportations and soviet-nazi collusion were two of the most censored topics during the occupation.
These incredible acts of defiance at the Freedom Monument helped kickstart the Singing Revolution across the Baltic countries, enabling the 2 million strong Baltic Chain protest 2 years later on the 50th anniversary of the nazi-soviet pact.
They succeeded.
The soviet union confessed to its nazi collusion, the illegal annexation was annulled, and it helped set off a chain events that destroyed the soviet empire.
In 1992, Latvian soldiers returned to continue their guard in front of the Freedom Monument following a 52 year absence. They remain there at their post to this day in beautiful free Latvia.
I love all three Baltic countries. But I’m very pleased to say this is not a monument to the Baltic countries. It’s all Latvia.
I wonder whether the people who donated to this monument could possibly imagine this chain of events that their donations would contribute to half a century later - and for centuries to come.
It’s a reminder that we too stand in a pivotal moment in history when our contributions today, such as donations to Ukraine, can similarly shape freedom for centuries to come.
And perhaps destroy one more russian empire. Hopefully this time for good.
Based Baltic Takes
Here’s the funny thing, @NonKaz6 & @RackerBob.
There’s only about 6 million people in the Baltic countries. From that, very few of us are on Twitter. It never quite took off here. (And that’s before Musk turned it into a cesspit).
Even among people in the Baltic countries who call themselves NAFO, the vast majority are just focused on organising and delivering supplies to Ukraine with very little interest in Twitter, if they even have an account. There’s more to life than this app.
Yet, despite all this, it makes us very proud to know that we are considered so annoying by some of the worst people in the world who obsessively rage about our existence - the far right, the far left, the shills for autocratic regimes, the atrocity deniers, the genocide enthusiasts, the nazi-soviet pact defenders, the cheerleaders for war and terrorism who still think the world should be divided between “great powers”.
It must irritate the hell out of you that we enjoy our lives in our proudly independent democracies - right next to a miserable “great power” that failed to erase us. It must particularly irk you that the Baltic countries exposed and annulled the full nazi-soviet pact, turning your hammer and sickle from a symbol of empire into little more than a signifier of dumb opinions online by people with the privilege of never having lived under it.
You hate the Baltic countries because we were among the most recent to escape from autocratic imperialism, stand up for human freedoms, and warn the world about their continued threat from fascist regimes like russia. And, as aggression worsens, you run out of people who might believe your bullshit and more people than ever listen to us.
And we’ve got news for you all.
If you think we’re annoying now then you haven’t seen anything yet. Because we won’t be the last to tell that story.
Ukrainians will tell it for many, many generations to come. (By the way, there’s 7 times as many of them and they are not as reserved as us.)
In many more places around the world, people are literally dying to tell it too.
We understand it’s upsetting to you that your LARPing as anti-imperialists keeps getting overshadowed by people actually resisting imperialism. But it’s only going to get worse for you.
For that, our region can’t claim all the credit. 🙂
