Local 49 Director of Workforce & Community Development Jenny Winkelaar, along with Local 49, was recognized this week as Partner of the Year by St. Paul Public Schools for her role in bringing the Operating Engineers Pathway and heavy equipment sandbox to St. Paul Public Schools.
The in-person program gives students a chance to earn high school and apprenticeship credit while getting hands-on experience in the sandbox and meeting industry professionals.
Many industry partners also helped make the sandbox possible. A ribbon cutting took place in May. Local 49 is proud to continue working with educational and industry partners to recruit and train the next generation of operators.

A heavy equipment “sandbox” for high school students officially opened last week next to Local 49's Union Hall in West Fargo, thanks to a partnership of Cass County CTE Center (C3TEC), the Career Innovation Center at NDSCS, IUOE Local 49 and North Dakota’s Building Trades Unions.
Partners have donated more than $350,000 in equipment, materials and labor for the sandbox, which provides a controlled environment to safely teach operating skills and prepare students for a career in the skilled trades. The sandbox is located on land donated by Local 49.
Local 49 is supporting Day of the Dozers, which introduces kids to construction and raises money for Children's Minnesota and Central Lakes College. We're looking for journey-level members who can safely help children operate equipment. Available this Saturday? Call 612-286-5990.
