I bet you didn't know Benjamin Franklin was this based. In 1753, Ben was tasked with leading negotiations for a treaty with leaders of Native American tribes. The goal was to secure an alliance against French territorial encroachments and to resolve issues with the fur trade. But one BIG problem arose. The Indians were addicted to rum. Ben had an idea. Deny the Indians their rum until the treaty was agreed to. Naturally, the Natives hastily agreed to the treaty and the rum flowed. Taking cover at the Green Tree Inn, Franklin waited out the chaos that soon emerged in the night. As Ben described it, the Indians were seen beating their women with firebrands, dancing around fires they had set, and even came banging on his door demanding more rum when they drank the supply dry. Franklin described it as a kind of "Hell on Earth" if it were to ever manifest. I can't type the rest of his comments here but you can read them for yourself in the image on this post 😄. Sadly they do exist, in droves. This is why the founders built in a level of aristocracy into our governmental structure when The Constitution was ratified. Our founders were deeply uncomfortable with unchecked democracy. This is why they designed the Senate to be a separate entity altogether. Up until 1913 with the passage of the 17th Amendment, Senators were chosen by the State legislatures so that Congress carried representation from both "the people" and "the states" to ensure that a simple 51% majority couldn't trample the rights of the other 49% as would happen in a pure democracy. The analogy George Washington used when describing this to Thomas Jefferson was the Cup and Saucer as they had coffee one morning. The House (the hot cup) was designed to be the immediate voice of the people. This naturally made it more prone to the whims of rapidly evolving public sentiment. The Senate (the cooling saucer) was designed to be a more aristocratic, deliberative body that ensured they weren't swayed by irresponsible whims of the public. The Senate was designed to serve as an internal check and balance of power within Congress itself. But we don't have that anymore. 1913 was a year of many changes.
