One of the biggest injustices I know of was corrected this morning when Alejandra walked out of old Folsom Prison after serving 25+ yrs of a life sentence she received after turning herself in for breaking a church window in Los Angeles in 1997.

My client was sent to solitary confinement ‘for her own safety.’
I asked officials for more explanation.
‘Sure,’ they said, ‘just get a release from your client.’
I mailed client the form.
Client received the form but can’t sign it bc guards won’t provide a pen in solitary.

This is a great project & I wish them well. @3strikesproject gets so many letters that, I regret to say, we don’t have enough staff to even open them all.
After @emilybazelon’s front page @NYTmag story about Yutico Briley came out last year, she started to received a bunch of mail from prisoners, and sometimes their advocates, asking for help. nyti.ms/3QcIxS7

Met a client for the first time today. He’s served 15 yrs so far for purse-snatching. He has dementia and heart failure and reads at a 2nd grade level. He can’t remember how long he’s been in prison or what his sentence actually is.
It’s 79-yrs-to-life.

decline in California, and have been for many years," says @3strikesproject's @mromano via @USATODAY: stanford.io/3uVkYpn
