Cittanupassana section, Mahasatipatthana Sutta,
Observing the mind,
“This is a mind with delusion”; or when a
mind without delusion arises, he knows, “This is a mind without delusion”
When one knows these two mind states well. One can then contemplate between the two. Which is better? More peaceful?
When the mind is delusional, trapped in the endless mind loop of me, myself, and I story telling mode, it can be rather disturbing. (To say the least)
When the mind is not delusional, i.e. Samma Sati (Bare Attention, Mindfulness in the present moment, just beyond the symbolic thinking mind), Samma Samadhi (when thought thinking stops) , or Samma Vayama (abiding in the Brahma Viharas, again at the no thought thinking mode). Then there's no delusion, No storytelling about reality.
5 a.m. , Morning Meditation, Such a good time to meditate, the world still asleep, the morning quietude.
Be still, and know
The Mahāsatipaṭṭhānasutta is so well layed out. It's like a Prescription, or a Formula. Provides cures and results , respectively, when practiced. Each verse being a practice point to be developed, experienced, and eventually understood. It's no nonsense and keeps one grounded in both the mundane and supramundane states.
Yes. It's a map. And just like any map you can sit and read it, and all that. Without a map one can get lost very easily. And, also like a map, one has to actually start walking, step by step, inch by inch. Only then will one recognize the signposts and markers along the way. And also recognize when one has strayed afar off of the path. Specifically in regards to The Noble Eightfold Path.
I've also been listening to this on Audible, it's about a 40 minute listen. It's a nice break at work. It's been good for Wise Reflection.

Whilst I’m jhana-posting, a common refrain you hear these days is that nimitta jhanas have no basis in the original Buddhist suttas.
The claim is that nimitta jhanas were made up out of whole cloth by the later commentarial tradition.
But it’s not true.
There is a basis in the suttas for the development of the nimitta jhanas.
In the Upakkilesa Sutta (MN 128) the Buddha teaches a technique of developing a visual nimitta, expanding its intensity via removal of the defilements and then using it as a basis for progressing through the jhanas.
Sure, he doesn’t label each jhana stage with the word “jhana” here but he uses the usual stock phrases for describing each of the jhanas, which is a common format in the suttas for communicating phenomena that have already been labelled elsewhere.
It’s true that some of the commentarial presentations of nimitta jhana progression add new details to what’s present in the suttas.
But so too do almost all widely taught “soft jhana” techniques, which usually add further specific and themes to what is explicitly present in their source material, where it’s underspecified.
For my part, I think in the vast majority of cases, neither “hard jhana” nor “soft jhana” proponents have an exclusive claim to being faithful to one of the range of techniques described in the suttas.
The techniques presented in the suttas are too varied to make such a claim.
Putting the suttas to one side to focus on practical matters, it seems pretty clear to me that the modal output of “soft jhanas” and “hard jhanas” is a different type of state.
I believe that both of these states can have value depending on a practitioners goal and there’s no need for one to fight for universal supremacy over the other.
I do think keeping the distinction clear is helpful for ensuring that neither modality becomes obscured for those who can benefit from it.

I have this thought often, so when I ask can it be this simple I mean simple as in how simple the four noble truths explain suffering. It seems so simple. Whenever we do harm, we do harm to a person by ignoring their personhood.

Regarding the "dry insight“ discussion and people like Sam Harris saying you don‘t need jhana but somehow themselves not having "finished the project":
"In the case of the attainer of the third path, he must have also fully developed concentration (samádhi)."
