Game Freak has confirmed in an interview that they expect that the classic turn-based battle system may disappear or heavily change in future main series Pokémon games, and created Pokémon Champions to preserve the classic gameplay moving forward.

I think what I’m trying to get across is that while I think it’s a bit silly to be THIS against the battle system changing in ANY way, I also understand where those fears lie. There’s fear in losing both that connection, and being able to even recognize something you love. (14/?)

I’m not advocating for DRASTIC changes, but I do think that the fundamental identity and connective spirit of Pokémon CAN persist in a new system, but it HAS to be well-considered. Ultimately, it’s down to Game Freak to make the correct calls. (15/?)
